@UnderJamz - Don't let them govermint thieves into my wallet any more. Tell them to git! And ifin they want a public safety center, they kin start cuttin spending on other garbage. It makes me puke that they want another dime out of my change purse. Property tax! Sales tax! Income tax! Registration fees (tax)! Property tax! Now git, govermint!
@UnderJamz - Al T
Mayor Becker, fudged polls, KSL all want Prop 1 to pass.
Afterall, it's not their wallet their digging into to pay for the shmancy new building with all the fixins.
No, it's us, the taxpayers who are obligated to pay just because we live in the area.
Some will say we don't have to live here and they are right, but we also chose to live here before all this corruption and squadering of our monies was taking place.
We also have the right to chose who we want to keep in office.
Folks like Mayor Becker . .. yeah, it's time for him to go next election.
@UnderJamz - We don't need no stinkn' police anyway, they don't do nothing but steal my moneys. If they are gone I can finally marry my sister. Git Govermint!
@UnderJamz - The Tribune and KSL have incessantly promothed this idea by saying "it is only $75 on a $250,000 home" but they leave out the important part - It is $75 per year for 21 YEARS(length of bond repayment)
Why must property owners and homeowners be soaked for every "public need"? There are plenty of empty building downtown which would make a fine new home for the SLC PD, for less than half of what hey want to spend on this palace.
Why couldn't the $30 for the Zoo and $20 for the Aviary be used for real public needs.
@UnderJamz - I just voted but I can't tell you my choice.
However...The bonds are would be issued for 21 years and are expected to mmature in 21 years. What does that means? It mean that the interest they are going to collect from a owner of a house OR a BUSINESS ( please don't own both!) worth $260.880 will be $75 every years! for Twenty one years. Minimum. they said that that minimum is guarantied. ITs not going to be less ever...au contraire!
The $75 dollars represent the minimum that will automatically be collected from each one of the owners of the house or BUSiness should they be worth $ 260.880...$37.50 if it is worth 1/2? ...NO!... $37.50 minimum...No because The $260.880 is an average and all average represents the best situations wether you are worst more or less you'll definitly pay more if you're worth LESS. The average are always in favor of the higher. No word about THe $22000 in promotion for your education, same as last years promotion..it is probably paid by the bonds that are at maturity and that are just going to be renewed...
HOw long were they for and how long are they going to be for? not a word. Just be shure that you are already paying for them and they are going to be in addition...
SO why talk about maturity if they are just perpetualy renewed? I don't know... who cares?
@UnderJamz - I wish I could of voted against the proposition for the new building up town. All we voted for is the granite school district prop that I voted for and a new water commissioner. Next year will be when votes matter. This election is really much a do about nothing.
@UnderJamz - My issue with taxation through a bond, is that only property owners who's property will be taxed to pay for the bond, should have the right to vote for or against it.
I live in an rural area where the schools are over crowded, and a good portion of the crowding is coming from several trailer parks. These parks are filled with welfare and low income renters. They contribute NOTHING to the tax base to support property tax bonds to build new schools. Their children qualify for all the "free" programs, and many of the kids are in resource and other special needs programs.
Let those who are forced to pay for new buildings through increased property taxes be the ONLY one who are allowed to make those decisions and vote.
@the jonah - change your vote is to late...because proposition 1 is the only thing we are voting on TODAY.
THAT'S right! It is just a Yes or No on that building.
The building is for the coordination of the emergencies of various deparments....Just offices. the different agency, police, fire ,medical, strategies, , announcement etc (oh! and justice).
The building is not to relocate the differents agencies! The police is not moving, some offices are moving, same for the fire, or the medical , health, and what ever else is associated with emergency... but not the actual troops...Them they stay in their old building that are falling down...
Only emergencies, stray cats and all!
did i get it right?
Quit creating your kool aid stats and learn to take care of yourself, instead of having this illustreous govt take from me to pay for you. You're a BIG boy now. GROW UP!!!!!!!
@news435reader - your going to cut your nose off to spite your face huh?
That Chief will be gone and we will still have a nice, updated, and safe public safety bldg..
@news435reader - If Becker and Burbank want the public's support, they first need to start supporting the voter's and taxpayer's wishes. They need to uphold immigration laws and crack down on thugs and gangs.
A vote for Prop 1 is a vote for business as usuall (or lack thereof).
@chaddyblaze - I am a conservative. I wont vote for candidates who dont stand for anything.
If you are a dem, then act like it. if you are a right leaning dem, change your party name....same goes for anyone who wants to play both sides of the fence like the stupid RINO's. Have the balls to stand up for what you believe. I think its insane that their can be 3 different kinds of the same party.
@chaddyblaze - chaddy,
You really don't consider modern day Republicans conservative do you? Career politicians are all owned by special interest groups. If you want public servants back in office, you had better vote for independants.
@chaddyblaze - Just like the Republicans lost just about every Senate and Congressional seat. Say no to so called conservatives. They just hide behind their church.
@chaddyblaze - So it's not possible to be fiscally conservative, and more of a middle of the roader in other aspects? You are the kind of voter that cause major fluctuations to those favoring a socialist platform. Perhaps you should have the intelligence and objectivity to understand that a person does not have to fit perfectly into your little box to be the best person for the job.
I just hope St. George gets some fresh ideas and a new mayor. McArthur has been in office for just a tad bit too long.
It rubs me the wrong way when politicians, local, state, or national, are in office for far too long. Regardless of political affiliation; I think there comes a point in time where politicians have worn out their welcome and need to step down.
That goes for Mayor McArthur, Senators Hatch and Bennett, Joe Biden, (Kennedy before he passed away), McCain, and anyone else that has cemented their rear ends as a permanent fixture in our government institution.
I believe that the Founding Fathers were cautious and weary about not having an aristocracy and concentration of power in just an elite few (which is what we have today)

@st.georgeinformed - st.george,
I agree completely with your statement. However, it amazing how much damage an individual can do in a short period of time. Take the last 8 years of Bush only vetoing 1 spending bill. Now we have a clown in office that makes the last clown look like a miser! We are headed for hyper-inflation and the collapse of the dollar. Not to mention the fact that both are aloowing us to be invaded by criminals, drug dealers and tax cheats. By the time Obama is out of office, our country will be economically damaged beyond repair.
well i just voted NO TO PROP 1. I am sorry Becker is not running for re election now. Because i would vote for the homeless wet dog i saw walking down the street early this morning as a write in to get BECKER out of office. Atleast the homeless dog reeked of sincerity and a good personality, plus a nice smile.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
My infinite wisdom is only overshadowed by my modesty
The ONLY reason i am going to vote today is to vote NO on prop 1. When the cops treat people like people, I may consider buying them a new building. I don't want my taxes raised to support a department who consistently throws their weight around
@French M. - You know it only seems to me that when someone wants to complain about cops and them "throwing their weight around" is when they are the ones breaking the laws and the cops have to keep getting after you. Here's a great idea to keep a cop away from you. DON'T BREAK THE LAW!!! And when I say don't break the law that means go the speed limit, get your insurance, use your «no swearing please» blinker. You see when the cops get the "thug" or are able to catch the bad guy everyone LOVES them, but when it comes to upholding the everyday law everyone hates them. MAKE UP YOUR MIND.
prop 1: "would pay an extra $75 a year. " plus the expired bonds that are going to be renew because they are already in the budget! And what else we don't know about...?
Boy, if they don't get what they want, as the medical for Meth related scams... you are not gona see acop for awhile but alot of tickets!
No to Prop 1. No tax increases. I think Obama has printed enough to cover all these expenses. Time to put government on a budget. While the masses are eating humble pie, they can suck an egg!!!
City officials have spent nearly $22,000 on the Proposition 1 campaign to educate people about the old and new proposed facility.....
can we get a detail on that bill and what was the specific results? Who got the money?
I though the city had accountants and ingeneers. They have not actualy work on construction plans did they ?
What exactly is this education cost... just the cute one day banners al over the city or was there just one to show on TV,
thats going to be some collector item!
I always thought that there was no ggoodd electrician in slc. Could it be true? The chief of fire agrees on that.
Oh! no...$22000 just to educate the people! right!
I don't understand why anyone would vote yes on this it just means more cops more law inFORCEMENT more tickets Heck haven't they wrote enough tickets and raped the people enough to pay for this project with stupid fines like $87.50 for a non working back up light
@C_g84780 - Oh you people crack me up. Yea lets pull the police off the streets there are way to many of them, but wait oh whose gonna make it safe when you are walking to your car and some "thugs" beat you from behind. Oh and when your kid can't walk down the street because Mr. Candy Pee pee toucher hasn't been caught yet. Yea it does suck paying for all those stupid little fines but hey guess what if you fixed your crap and took initiative to follow the law then you wouldn't have to worry. Like I said before those that complain about cops are the ones not following the laws.
Mayor candidate Len Areve is the CFO of Woodside Homes which is currently in a dispute with the City worth hundreds of thousands of dollars and yet he claims he has no conflict of interest. Don't be fooled. Don't vote for Arave.
How is a new building going to improve public safety? Is it going to reduce the number of burglaries? Is it going to reduce traffic accidents? Is it going to reduce drug trafficking? Is it going to provide a comfortable retreat to get the cop off his beat and reduce a public nuisance? (sarcasm for those who don't recognize it) Is it going to maximize parking citations? How is a central building going to improve the public safety throughout the city? I thought that public safety was improved with an expanded presence and not by providing a hiding place for public bureaucrats. I must admit that I have not followed all of the propaganda since it is not my wallet that is being raped, I was smart enough to move out of Salt Lake City.
"We want a better turnout, but we also want people to study the issues and the candidates"
Bull... there is only one issue in sl YES or NO the spending.
Thats it! all the fuss, the volunteers, the electronic machine out of storage, recertified, distributed, maintained, tested, once tested twice, The very small sign on the street...All that fuss for 1 question that was already answered twice in SL.
Even the volunteer say that its an outrage... a waste of time.
Answer twice because they mention last years results but they forget that a $ 230 million figure was mentionned two years ago! OR maybe 10 years ago as the chief of police put it... Way before the Olympics!!!!
I will be curious to note the "sheep factor" of utah voters because there are bond (i.e. DEBT) questions on our ballots ALL OVER this state. It's unreal, government behaves as if we don't pay any taxes at all because they're coming at us to strap all this debt to our backs and permanently raise our property taxes. My blood started to boil as the stupid FOX 13 news was listing bond election after bond election on our ballots today (without giving the opposition even one second to speak).
We've all heard about prop 1 in SLC where city government has intentionally neglected repairs on the current "public safety" building so they can come to the voters and guilt us into going into MASSIVE debt to build them a Taj Mahal, but for those of us who THANKFULLY don't live in SLC proper, we are still having to deal with government attempting to strap debt to our backs (for the children of course, and as if we don't even pay taxes already).
I'm tempted to say "vote no on all bonds" but if I NEED to say that, then there's an even bigger problem with the public. If people are so brainwashed to be government worshipers, that they'll strap tons of debt to their backs
@T shane - Roger, how bout you drop the attitude of being a victim with your feelings hurt for a just a couple of seconds. I explained very clearly what constitutes a "sheep." I made it clear that we have a severe problem in utah of people voting for every bond (debt) just because government TOLD them to. I made it clear that government's tactic is to ignore the fact that we pay taxes, and to use DEBT to do things like build schools, and that few citizens have a backbone to even say "no" when they get in the voting booth (as long as it's "for the children").
Roger, it sounds like I said some things that you know are true, but you refuse to stand up to government so you pretend that some meanie on a message board is calling people "sheep" for no reason. Roger if these subjects are too adult for you to handle, then I hope you're not even registered to vote. It sounds like you're one of these people who supports every debt bond (for the children of course). Sorry to hurt your feewings and upset you but I'm sick of high taxes and endless debt strapped to my back by government, as if I don't already pay taxes.
I wasn't going to go vote today, but since ya calling people out on this, I think I will. I live in Granite school district, so I think I'll go vote YES on the school bond, just to spite your face.
It's easy for the folks who thrive on free handouts to support things that do not directly impact them.
Meanwhile, I have been raised with good values and the ability to think things through and I see that the collective media, local government and the various special interest groups have much to gain at our expense.
With that said, I completely support VOTING AGAINST any and all props this year and possibly next. Most of our 'elected' leaders have failed us and the ball is in our court now, 2010 and 2012.
WHY DOES KSL A LDS OWNED WEBSITE KEEP FLAUNTING SEXUAL PICTURES IN THEIR ADS? MANY OF THE IMAGES THAT SHOW UP IN THE RIGHT SIDE COLUMN ARE VERY PROVOCATIVE IN NATURE BOTH FOR MALES AND FEMALES. WHATS THE DEAL KSL?

Hey Salt Lake cops, maybe if your boss stepped it up like Ogden did and enforced the law regarding illegals, we the taxpayers might of been a little more open to having to pay more so you could have that nice new building and . .. wait a second. . I'm still not going to vote to have my taxes raised no matter what the excuse is.
@Kyle S. - UnderJamz,
You do realize that LOCAL law enforcement are not ICE agents and don't have the authority to just arrest someone cause a cop thinks he's and illegal alien. Oh wait a minute wasn't it someone who lived in Salt Lake that complained that a drunk driver was allowed to drive for 10 mins until a cop could come? Yea I think it was and when it happens again to you. Don't piss and moan that a cop isn't there to help cause he's to busy catching illegal aliens ON HIS BUDGET!!!!
I will happily go vote and vote for anyone who is not in office as of 12:00 last night...And I will do the same in 2010 when everyone in the House and wherever comes up for reelection. Time to CLEAN HOUSE...
@Iron Pyrite aka What? .. - Why their not building a new jail. What does having a fancy new building instead of painting the old one have to do with housing prisoners.
I hope the school bond passes in Davis County. There's lots of growth. Schools are needed. Great time to borrow and bond. Won't actually raise taxes (although it doesn't reduce them either which I guess is viewed as a tax hike). But it's a good way to locally support schools.
@Rick W. - Not sure what you were looking at but the voting booth spelled out how much taxes were going to be raised so how can you say it is not going to be a tax hike?
It said typical home valued at $250K can expect a tax increase of $137 - seems pretty plain to me.
@Rick W. - If the bond is not passed, then taxes would FALL by about $158. Since passing the bond PREVENTS the FALL of taxes by $158, it is considered a TAX HIKE of $158 because, otherwise, residents will be paying less.
That is why it's called a tax hike even though residents will not paying an amount higher than they currently are.
Everyone is missing the point of this story. MOST UTAH”S DO NOT CARE! One of the greatest blessings about being AMERICAN is VOTING! Only 7%, eligible to vote, have voted so far. I bet, by the end of this day, we have a total voter turnout at around 15-20%. Basically every 5th person decided our future. At least I was one of those people.
Only 7 percent are voting? That is sickening. We need a mandatory voting law and election day should be a state holiday. If only a measly 7 percent of the citizens have the backbone to vote, that means 93% will whine about the tax increases from the needless bonds that THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE GUTS TO VOTE AGAINST. Sickening.
I sure am glad i do not live in Salt Lake. If the "Honorable Citizens" of Salt Lake vote to bond the new building watch folks by janualry or earlier Salt Lake will be crying fould when County and State taxes go up.
It has all been reported right here in the news folks SLC County alrready wants to increase taxes, the state is at a all time revenue low so even though no one on the state level has stated jack up state taxes count on the fact allot will change when the legislature meets this January. Well Salt Lake if you vote for the new building good luck suckers. You will be in doubt soon real soon and not in debt do to your own spending but Govrernment just refuses to take responsibility for its spending so they jack your taxes up.
Well it looks like the mindless government suck ups, government worshipers, government drones and sheeeeeeeeeep, turned out in droves to vote for needless debt in SLC. I'm not really surprised because that city has become a hotbed of tax and spend socialists who love every leftist pile of nonsense that Becker can dream up.
SLC residents, you are stupid, you are morons, you are idiots, SO ENJOY your giant tax increase retards. Enjoy. Boy, you sure showed US didn't you. Yep, you really did. Every time you pass the new Taj Mahal for government employees, will you remember the government propaganda and lies about the supposed "need" for it? Will you remember how the media mindlessly pushed it? Or will you whine about high taxes in SLC and whine about no parking downtown. Enjoy the cess pool you've created for yourselves.
I predict that the idiots who voted for this proposition will be whining about the tax increase within a year. Thank GOD I don't have to live in SLC with such morons.
@T shane - I have to say you are one of the lowest forms of person to insult people you don't even know. Don't you have anything better to do. Apparently you don't even live in SLC so the H**L do you care.
lol just figured out i dont live in slc. I live in Holladay. phew that was a close one no tax increase for me after all :P. I really hope that Granite School District bond fails though.
@Kyle S. - Earlier you posted you just voted no on the prop, but know you dont live there. How exactly did you vote on it then. You are nothing but a liar! What a clown.
It's amazing to me how every year people happily vote for higher taxes. I believe taxes are high enough! The government should start living within their means! It doesn't mean I am against schools, zoos, buildings, parks, or anything else they put on the ballot. It just means I think government officials should find a way to pay for it with the 20 plus percent of my income they already receive.
Who in their right mind would VOTE IN a tax right now with this economy? I can not belive people actually get douped in to voting for this crap...Just like the one time new trax line tax, what happend with that. O they needed then to maintain the line and pay employees. Same exact thing with the new Ice rink that we built for the olympics. It was spossed to be a one time tax thing, yet agin they kept that tax in as well for the same reasone well now we have to maintain it and pay employees...
I know with no amount of uncertainty that you could have updated all the systems got new screens got new radios did a once in a life time update of the building they are allready in. Why do they need a new building. People wake up...
@Lapitup - After the part where my comment says "building they are allready in" I forgot to add they could have done it considrably less then half what they got allicated for; for the new bilding. Unbelivable!
@Lapitup - Also do you (the people who actually voted for this tax) actually belive that once the new building is up and running that the tax will go away>???? The tax will remain just watch and see. That is exactly why you never ever vote in a new tax. I just can't comprehend it.
All you people that voted prop 1 are idiots. I don't buy it for a moment. Someone made some good money in this deal. I think the word "corrupt" fits this story.
KSL's public inspection files, including the Children's Television Programming Reports and the DTV Quarterly Activity Station Report, are available for viewing during regular office hours at the KSL Broadcast House.
Cops can make cut backs like the rest of us.
It's not like they are enforcing the law with the illegals who continue to get coddled.
Mayor Becker, fudged polls, KSL all want Prop 1 to pass.
Afterall, it's not their wallet their digging into to pay for the shmancy new building with all the fixins.

Folks like Mayor Becker . .. yeah, it's time for him to go next election.
The govermint should do two things:
1. Find the money in existing funds through spending cuts, like the bloody, sweaty taxpayer has to do.
2. Git.
With a nice new building, comes higher operation costs. Yep your taxes go up again to cover these costs. Find your money elsewhere. Get a lottery!!!!
Why must property owners and homeowners be soaked for every "public need"? There are plenty of empty building downtown which would make a fine new home for the SLC PD, for less than half of what hey want to spend on this palace.

You would vote for a horse if it were a Republican?

Meanwhile, I have been raised with good values and the ability to think things through and I see that the collective media, local government and the various special interest groups have much to gain at our expense.
With that said, I completely support VOTING AGAINST any and all props this year and possibly next. Most of our 'elected' leaders have failed us and the ball is in our court now, 2010 and 2012.
In fact, lets get all those who look at porn to pay for it as well.
You'd be surprised how quickly the state of Utah would have a surplus in it's budget.

I live on a budget and so should you.
The bond passed so take that Kyle S.!!! BAHAHAHAHAHAH
You cops have lost the respect of the people.
Talk to your boss, maybe he might want to regain the public trust.
Then, you might not still have even a have a remote chance of getting us to not vote ever to have our taxes raised ever.
Confused?
Try dealing with the illegals once in a while.

it just makes you obvious as to what an idiot you are.
It said typical home valued at $250K can expect a tax increase of $137 - seems pretty plain to me.
That is why it's called a tax hike even though residents will not paying an amount higher than they currently are.
It sounds like the only smart people thus far is Duchesne they shot the bond down WISE MOVE.
I know with no amount of uncertainty that you could have updated all the systems got new screens got new radios did a once in a life time update of the building they are allready in. Why do they need a new building. People wake up...
Now that the polls are closed, election volunteers are working to quickly tally the votes.
Just wondering...how can you be a volunteer if you are being paid for doing it.
I always though a volunteer was someone who volunteers to do something...uncompensated.
Last I knew, those who assisted with elections were paid to do so.
