Mayor Becker, fudged polls, KSL all want Prop 1 to pass.
Afterall, it's not their wallet their digging into to pay for the shmancy new building with all the fixins.
No, it's us, the taxpayers who are obligated to pay just because we live in the area.
Some will say we don't have to live here and they are right, but we also chose to live here before all this corruption and squadering of our monies was taking place.
We also have the right to chose who we want to keep in office.
Folks like Mayor Becker . .. yeah, it's time for him to go next election.

@UnderJamz - The Tribune and KSL have incessantly promothed this idea by saying "it is only $75 on a $250,000 home" but they leave out the important part - It is $75 per year for 21 YEARS(length of bond repayment)
Why must property owners and homeowners be soaked for every "public need"? There are plenty of empty building downtown which would make a fine new home for the SLC PD, for less than half of what hey want to spend on this palace.

Why couldn't the $30 for the Zoo and $20 for the Aviary be used for real public needs.

@UnderJamz - I just voted but I can't tell you my choice.
However...The bonds are would be issued for 21 years and are expected to mmature in 21 years. What does that means? It mean that the interest they are going to collect from a owner of a house OR a BUSINESS ( please don't own both!) worth $260.880 will be $75 every years! for Twenty one years. Minimum. they said that that minimum is guarantied. ITs not going to be less ever...au contraire!
The $75 dollars represent the minimum that will automatically be collected from each one of the owners of the house or BUSiness should they be worth $ 260.880...$37.50 if it is worth 1/2? ...NO!... $37.50 minimum...No because The $260.880 is an average and all average represents the best situations wether you are worst more or less you'll definitly pay more if you're worth LESS. The average are always in favor of the higher. No word about THe $22000 in promotion for your education, same as last years promotion..it is probably paid by the bonds that are at maturity and that are just going to be renewed...
HOw long were they for and how long are they going to be for? not a word. Just be shure that you are already paying for them and they are going to be in addition...
SO why talk about maturity if they are just perpetualy renewed? I don't know... who cares?

@UnderJamz - My issue with taxation through a bond, is that only property owners who's property will be taxed to pay for the bond, should have the right to vote for or against it.

I live in an rural area where the schools are over crowded, and a good portion of the crowding is coming from several trailer parks. These parks are filled with welfare and low income renters. They contribute NOTHING to the tax base to support property tax bonds to build new schools. Their children qualify for all the "free" programs, and many of the kids are in resource and other special needs programs.

Let those who are forced to pay for new buildings through increased property taxes be the ONLY one who are allowed to make those decisions and vote.

You shouldn't have a SAY...if you do not PAY.

I just hope St. George gets some fresh ideas and a new mayor. McArthur has been in office for just a tad bit too long.

It rubs me the wrong way when politicians, local, state, or national, are in office for far too long. Regardless of political affiliation; I think there comes a point in time where politicians have worn out their welcome and need to step down.

That goes for Mayor McArthur, Senators Hatch and Bennett, Joe Biden, (Kennedy before he passed away), McCain, and anyone else that has cemented their rear ends as a permanent fixture in our government institution.

I believe that the Founding Fathers were cautious and weary about not having an aristocracy and concentration of power in just an elite few (which is what we have today)

How is a central building going to improve the public safety throughout the city? I will be curious to note the "sheep factor" of utah voters because there are bond (i.e. DEBT) questions on our ballots ALL OVER this state. It's unreal, government behaves as if we don't pay any taxes at all because they're coming at us to strap all this debt to our backs and permanently raise our property taxes. My blood started to boil as the stupid FOX 13 news was listing bond election after bond election on our ballots today (without giving the opposition even one second to speak).

We've all heard about prop 1 in SLC where city government has intentionally neglected repairs on the current "public safety" building so they can come to the voters and guilt us into going into MASSIVE debt to build them a Taj Mahal, but for those of us who THANKFULLY don't live in SLC proper, we are still having to deal with government attempting to strap debt to our backs (for the children of course, and as if we don't even pay taxes already).

I'm tempted to say "vote no on all bonds" but if I NEED to say that, then there's an even bigger problem with the public. If people are so brainwashed to be government worshipers, that they'll strap tons of debt to their backs

@T shane - Roger, how bout you drop the attitude of being a victim with your feelings hurt for a just a couple of seconds. I explained very clearly what constitutes a "sheep." I made it clear that we have a severe problem in utah of people voting for every bond (debt) just because government TOLD them to. I made it clear that government's tactic is to ignore the fact that we pay taxes, and to use DEBT to do things like build schools, and that few citizens have a backbone to even say "no" when they get in the voting booth (as long as it's "for the children").

Roger, it sounds like I said some things that you know are true, but you refuse to stand up to government so you pretend that some meanie on a message board is calling people "sheep" for no reason. Roger if these subjects are too adult for you to handle, then I hope you're not even registered to vote. It sounds like you're one of these people who supports every debt bond (for the children of course). VOTE NO on Prop1

You cops have lost the respect of the people.

Talk to your boss, maybe he might want to regain the public trust.

Then, you might not still have even a have a remote chance of getting us to not vote ever to have our taxes raised ever.

Confused?

Try dealing with the illegals once in a while.

I hope the school bond passes in Davis County. There's lots of growth. Schools are needed. Great time to borrow and bond. Won't actually raise taxes (although it doesn't reduce them either which I guess is viewed as a tax hike). But it's a good way to locally support schools.

@Rick W. - Not sure what you were looking at but the voting booth spelled out how much taxes were going to be raised so how can you say it is not going to be a tax hike?

It said typical home valued at $250K can expect a tax increase of $137 - seems pretty plain to me.

@Rick W. - If the bond is not passed, then taxes would FALL by about $158. Since passing the bond PREVENTS the FALL of taxes by $158, it is considered a TAX HIKE of $158 because, otherwise, residents will be paying less.

That is why it's called a tax hike even though residents will not paying an amount higher than they currently are.

Everyone is missing the point of this story. MOST UTAH”S DO NOT CARE! One of the greatest blessings about being AMERICAN is VOTING! Only 7%, eligible to vote, have voted so far. I bet, by the end of this day, we have a total voter turnout at around 15-20%. Basically every 5th person decided our future. At least I was one of those people.

Only 7 percent are voting? That is sickening. We need a mandatory voting law and election day should be a state holiday. If only a measly 7 percent of the citizens have the backbone to vote, that means 93% will whine about the tax increases from the needless bonds that THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE GUTS TO VOTE AGAINST. Sickening.

I sure am glad i do not live in Salt Lake. If the "Honorable Citizens" of Salt Lake vote to bond the new building watch folks by janualry or earlier Salt Lake will be crying fould when County and State taxes go up.

It has all been reported right here in the news folks SLC County alrready wants to increase taxes, the state is at a all time revenue low so even though no one on the state level has stated jack up state taxes count on the fact allot will change when the legislature meets this January. Well Salt Lake if you vote for the new building good luck suckers. You will be in doubt soon real soon and not in debt do to your own spending but Govrernment just refuses to take responsibility for its spending so they jack your taxes up.

Well it looks like the mindless government suck ups, government worshipers, government drones and sheeeeeeeeeep, turned out in droves to vote for needless debt in SLC. I'm not really surprised because that city has become a hotbed of tax and spend socialists who love every leftist pile of nonsense that Becker can dream up.

SLC residents, you are stupid, you are morons, you are idiots, SO ENJOY your giant tax increase retards. Enjoy. Boy, you sure showed US didn't you. Yep, you really did. Every time you pass the new Taj Mahal for government employees, will you remember the government propaganda and lies about the supposed "need" for it? Will you remember how the media mindlessly pushed it? Or will you whine about high taxes in SLC and whine about no parking downtown. Enjoy the cess pool you've created for yourselves.

I predict that the idiots who voted for this proposition will be whining about the tax increase within a year. Thank GOD I don't have to live in SLC with such morons.

It's amazing to me how every year people happily vote for higher taxes. I believe taxes are high enough! The government should start living within their means! It doesn't mean I am against schools, zoos, buildings, parks, or anything else they put on the ballot. It just means I think government officials should find a way to pay for it with the 20 plus percent of my income they already receive.

Who in their right mind would VOTE IN a tax right now with this economy? I can not belive people actually get douped in to voting for this crap...Just like the one time new trax line tax, what happend with that. O they needed then to maintain the line and pay employees. Same exact thing with the new Ice rink that we built for the olympics. It was spossed to be a one time tax thing, yet agin they kept that tax in as well for the same reasone well now we have to maintain it and pay employees...

I know with no amount of uncertainty that you could have updated all the systems got new screens got new radios did a once in a life time update of the building they are allready in. Why do they need a new building. People wake up...

QUOTE***Volunteers work into the night to tally votes
Now that the polls are closed, election volunteers are working to quickly tally the votes.

Just wondering...how can you be a volunteer if you are being paid for doing it.

I always though a volunteer was someone who volunteers to do something...uncompensated.

Last I knew, those who assisted with elections were paid to do so.
