Cars that keep an eye on the driver and the road
Car makers have been manufacturing more vehicles that can keep drivers safe in dangerous conditions, but what if the driver is the danger? Some Utah researchers are trying to make cars more autonomous.

@MyOpinion4U - There were JUST as many (if not more) car accidents before cellphones. They are just the "cool" thing for the media to focus on.

@MyOpinion4U - that wont do a dang thing...an ipod or other music player can be just as distracting as a phone. playin with the radio can be just as dangerous as well. its the PEOPLE, they/we need to be more safe while driving. thats all, thats it.

@MyOpinion4U - How do you propose blocking cell phone usage inside a vehicle without adversely affecting cell phone use of those who are close by the car?

@MyOpinion4U - Blocking signals inside a car only would be easy, Faraday cage, but Cell phones are not the issue. The issue is people not paying attention to driving. That can happen under any conditions. Cellphones are just one more thing to add to the list. Radio, passengers, eating, sunlight, or even just "spacing out" are still just as common as cell phones to cause an accident.

@MyOpinion4U - Andrew: a Faraday cage is pretty failsafe. Everything can fail, but your headlights/engine/battery/brakes are all more likely to fail first.

Jared: I am not saying we don't need some laws, just that we have something rare and precious… Freedom. We need to think long and hard before we give that up for Healthcare, “the children”, or anything else, let alone stupid laws that are already covered.

Outspoken: Onstar will already do that, same with most cellphones, GPS, and even some sat radios.

A car that can drive itself so I can sleep on the way home? awesome. A car that yells at me when i talk to the kids or turn on the radio? not cool. I dont need yet another back seat driver.

As long as humans are involved with the operation of vehicles, there will always be danger. People make mistakes. And sometimes people make bad decisions that jeopardize the safety of others. Making a vehicle fully autonomous elimates the human driver but humans would still be designing the thing.

@Yapper - Ah, but you're forgetting that humans make misteaks in the software and hardware that makes it "fully autonomous" so I don't know if it is any better than the human behind the wheel?

@Yapper - Regularguy: Yes there could be mistakes but in comparison to the average number of accidents (6 million a year in the U.S.) and 40,000 fatalities I'll take my chances with a computer anyday.

We live in a pretty pathetic world when car manufacturers have to make vehicles autonomous.

If you can't be responsible to drive safely, why is it someone else's job to find a way to make sure you remain safe when you allow yourself to be distracted.

STOP BEING DISTRACTED and I agree MyOpinion4U, they should make a device that blocks cell phone usage when you are driving. When are people going to wake up and realize that your friends and family are less important than the task of driving safely to your destination.

ACCIDENTS don't happen . . . PEOPLE create accidents and excuses for not being responsibile in life. Accidents are things you have NO control over. Example . . . a child had an accident in his pants vs. a parent was arguing with her child and had an auto collision with another vehicle.

@charismatic - Sounds like someone was "distracted" for a few years too long and had to deal with damp shorts until highschool.

An Accident is when a parent was arguing with her child and had an auto collision with another vehicle.

A child tinkling in his pants is lack of discipline and control.

Accidents can be caused by Negligence or something purely random.

Go ahead, ask for more technology in your car again. But don't go whining and complaining when it costs a small fortune to fix your car when it breaks.

I was riding a UTA bus this morning and I noticed that when the lights turned red for us, a light on the dashboard said "stop light" then as soon as the light turned green the light turned off. The guy in the article said there isn't an algorithm that allows cars to recognized red lights, but UTA has some system that lets the bus driver know if an upcoming light is red or green, maybe they could use that method. All in all I think if we rely on the cars to much to be safe and do our job, then we will become that much more lazy as drivers in our cars.

lol. I just want a car like KITT from Knight Rider...I wore Knight Rider PJ's as a kid!

In all seriousness though, I think having something telling me that I was engaging in potentially distracting behavior would be just that--i.e., distracting.

Have you ever been lost with the annoying GPS voice telling you to make a U Turn? I've almost thrown it out the window on several occasions.

Sometimes less is more. In this case, less research, yields more safety...or as safe as we can be.

I agree with some of the comments here... it is not the car or the technology what will prevent an accident... it is the driver who needs to leave on the side everything when behind the wheel... safe driving, no accidents!!! He Dicho!!!
