@MyOpinion4U - You beat me too it . .lol . . I was going to say that times are tough and I imagine this cuts back on the fresh road kill for families that depend on fast food road kill. How is this stimulating the economy?
The same war that all the dems voted for and the same war Obama is sending more troops too? is that the one you are talking about? Obama has been in office for almost a year and the liberal idiots still act like Bush is president......
@MyOpinion4U - To say that anybody is worse president than Bush proves your an idiot. You need to take you blinder off and really pay attention. As for the dems voting for the war in Iraq, that was only after Bush cooked the books. Oh wweapons of mass destruction! Yeah notice we still havent found them. Then the troop hike is in afganistan where we should have been the whole time instead of putting money into the hands of Bush-Cheney cronies. Look what the Bush administation did to the deficit, and what did we get for it? Nothing. At least the fence will save some drivers lives and it stimulates the economy by givin people jobs. Now get back to watching FOX news with you blinders on. Idiot.
@MyOpinion4U - Hey Poot- you seriously have to be one of the most short sighted posters on this blog. Do you ever think about the car accidents (potential deaths) that this fence might help to mitigate- by keeping the animals off the road, thus keeping a driver from swerving, rolling, dying, or inadvertantly killing someone else, etc..? For once, pull your head out and think outside the box. That does seem like alot to ask from you, however. Nevermind.
@chaddyblaze - it's not a fence for animals it's a fence to prevent cars from being totaled because they hit an animal. Have you seen what an elk, deer or moose can do to a car?
@chaddyblaze - There are fatalities every year from people hitting large animals or swerving to avoid them, I would think it's more about that than saving animals.
Add up the bill picked up by Utah for emergency and hospital services for people killed or injured because of hitting large animals and it probably eclipses the fence cost.
So this fence is intended to cut back on roadkill? I don't travel that area a lot but I would like to know exactly what animals it would deter from entering the road. It seems to me that most of the road kill i see is large game like dear and elk. A small 4 foot fence won't even slow thoes animals down. Sounds like a big waste of money to me.
@lv2snwbrd - Deer fences are usually 7 to 8 feet. Sardine Canyon between Logan and Brigham City has had one for years. Deer still get hit but the numbers seem to have decreased.
@lv2snwbrd - The fence in the picture only looks to be 3 to 4 feet tall. I hope it works, it just looks like a waste to me. Seems like they could have found a better way to spend the money on a wildlife project.
@lv2snwbrd - It isn't 3 or 4 feet tall, more like 7 or 8. The picture was take above the fence, in front of a pile of dirt and on a decline. It's just deceiving.
@lv2snwbrd - Yapper, could it be that the number of deer hit in Sardine canyon has decreased because the number of deer in Sardine canyon has decreased? There have been quite a few mountain lions hit in Sardine canyon the last few years though.
I am glad to know the fence is 7 to 8 feet tall. Where did you get this information? I am just wondering because I have stood next to rolls of fence similar to that and they were only 4-5 feet tall.
Woops, apparently you didn't get the memo yet. That's all that the Obama stimulus is - wasted money. I'm amazed we don't have some granola eater group upset because now the animals can't follow their typical migratory path and will now die or some garbage like that. Oopsie, I probably just gave them an idea. Here it comes.
@Scott H. - You're not far off base with your jest. Haven't you heard of the "wildlife underpasses" being proposed and built for just such a reason? Now we can spend stimulus money on wildlife education so they know to use them. That makes sense, hey?
@Scott H. - It's OK to spend money up there and not worry about enviromental issues. If you plowed out a few hundred acres of trees and put in a new subdivision down here you would have issues. In Summit county it's OK to do what ever, spend whatever as long as your Subaru doesn't idle in your driveway.
@lonewolfeyes - Ah yes, I see your point. Clearly more spendulus does need to be spent to ensure every idiot has a fresh copy of "Hooked on Phonics". Thank you for your well written and convincing argument.
Funded by federal stimulus money? That really does not convey the correct source of funds. Makes it sound so easy.
One thing we should all be very aware of is that the Fed Gov't can only spend what it first takes from the productive base in society. This money came from hardworking fellow Americans - and it was not voluntarily given - it was taken by threat of force.
I am not arguing for or against the merits of the project in and of itself. I am suggesting that, as a people, we should not forget where the money really comes from.
History has proven that governments typically do one thing really well - grow in size and power and feed off their "subjects".
It should be painfully clear now that any handout provided by the gov't comes with strings attached. Those strings are generally a reduction in personal liberties and freedoms.
Those who have lost their freedom would prize it above all else. Those who are free seem ever ready to trade their freedom for promises of security - which generally prove false and both are lost.
@FmlyMan - What? we've run ot of money again?? We can just print more... Or borrow from our friends the Chinese. I wish I could legally do that to pay my debts.
Hummm! Just in this state alone there are people cold and hungry, guess we could have used that money to HELP THEM! If we are going to Pis# away money, than spend it in the right places!! A freaking fence?? Who thinks of this CRAP!
@Drummer - A father and baby were killed in my county a couple of months ago when their car flipped while swerving on I-15 to avoid a deer. It's about the road carnage to people, I would assume.
WHO IS THE IDIOTS RUNNING THIS COUNTRY AND CAME UP WITH THIS IDEA?
I need some stimulus money to keep my vehicle repaired from all the construction damage to the roads please and some donations so I can run for a Government office to stop this BS!
Here's another idea: Drive the SPEED LIMIT! Even though it's just a silly mortal law, the increased reaction time at 65 MPH will help your small self-interested brain avoid running into innocent bystanders and animals.
@Kurt G. - Ive wacked a deer at 30 miles an hour and had another one jump over the front of my car when I was doing about 30. Animals are unpredictable and often move at the last moment.
@Kurt G. - Here is another suggestion. Let’s gets some of the military research spending put into our vehicles. Mount laser cannons on top of the cars and when an offending deer runs out in front of you the heads up display auto targets the deer and terminates it out of existence.
Ridiculous yes. So are deer fences the ones that can’t jump over it just go to the end of the fence and cross there you just move the problem of where the deer cross the road.
Deer will not use a tunnel. Predators live in holes and their natural instinct for survival is to avoid holes. Tunnels do not work either.
Awesome just more ridiculous spending, Isnt it great to live in an Obomanation..... (Im just wondering who the genius's were that voted for this moron)
They could have given that money to the Jordan school district to ease the highway robbery the school district is perpetrating on the west Jordan residents in the form of property taxes.
How do I access my public land on that 5.6 miles of fenced off area? Do they have gates for the tax paying public or do we have to use the "escape ramps" also. Watch out for that first step!
For all this ridiculous "stimulus" money being tossed around, I have yet to see any positive results that affect me personally. Obama is an embarrassment
So...stimulus money is now being used to take jobs away from the workers at the RoadKill Cafe. Another viable business will have to close it's doors.....
Wonder what it would be like to "rap" an order at the RoadKill Cafe Drive Thru.......???
In many instances, game fences designed to prevent animal vehicle collisions also disrupt animal migration corridors. Preventing game from migrating from their summer range to their winter range has caused the complete eradication of local deer herds in some areas in the state. They should have also designed a way for the animals to safely cross the freeway to prevent the complete crash of that population. I saw nothing in the article to indicate either way whether there was an animal crossing.
@Kevin in the Terrace - Next on KLS: Animal crossing classes. If the government is going to control every aspect of our lives, then they should start controlling the animals as well.
If we are going to spend $400,000 on fences, we should also spend a little bit extra to educate the animals to use animal crossings properly.
Well good for the deer and good for a few days of work for a few minimum wage workers. That sure kicked the economy in gear. Who is thinking of this stuff.
We need food, water, shelter, You know the necessity's of life. It will require some thought in a way that we can earn a living, for a life time.
If you give a man a fish, you fed him a mill. Teach him to fish, you fed him a life time. Don't they know that there wage depends on the working man.
Hmmmmm, I think there should be a full corridor of deer fence from Monticello to Blanding in HWY 191. I mean the deer are hurling themselves out on the road, or even posing on the road to be hit.
@Ty P. - Only problem is, as far as food salvage, they are so torn up they aren't worth a lot. That is unless drivers about to hit an animal aim accurately for minimal meat damage. I would imagine that to be fairly hard if you're under the duress of screeching brakes, screaming deer and blaring iPod and cell phone or Blackberry.
I was under the impression that the stimulus monies went to projects that were ready to go. Projects that were already designed, and engineered. These are not new projects being conjured up as we go. Does any one really think that the president of the United Stated is sitting in the Oval Office trying to save deer? I think the current President is busy picking up the pieces left behind by the Texan. What a mess!
Lets put people to work. Lets do more Highway projects. I can think of worse ways to spend Federal $. Like invading innocent countries, or bailing out greedy bankers.
Most of you have clearly never seen the fence....or understand how many serious car accidents the fence will eliminate. This is not a new concept...these fences are proven. Deer and Moose have caused many serious accidents on this stretch of road...many serious injuries...and several fatalities in the last decade.
$395,000 spent here may very well be one of the best values of the stimulous.
If you want to complain about wasted money....start looking at those $30,000 atv's that homeland security is buying for local police departments. They only seem to use them for parade's!! There is wasted money.
@Nobadges - Nobadges you beat me to the punch. I have hit a deer in that area and it totaled my car. I was driving a little below the speed limit as it was dark and I know the dangers of big animals on the highway. By the grace of God and my seatbelt I was not hurt. I feel that anything that can be done to reduce injury or death is well worth the money.
@Nobadges - I have seen the fence and I drive parley's twice a day. There are many more deer accident-prone areas like 40 over to Heber. However, although the fence may not be a bad idea, it's implementation is lacking. In fact it is not tall enough to keep out deer or elk, nor is it strong enough to keep out a moose. It will keep out medium size animals like racoons, foxes, coyotes, etc. Maybe it will deter last minute darting out. I have had this happen twice to me in the last week on 40.
That being said, is this the best use of the money? How many jobless could have been taught a new skill to be employable? How many poor could have been housed and fed? ... But of course if the government does it, the money is really thrown away then. Do you know that for entitlement programs ... the various types: food stamps, affordable housing, etc. ... that only 11 cents of every dollar goes to the people in need. The rest goes to administrative costs of the government. Reputable charities range 11 to 22 cents of each dollar for administrative costs. Consider this when you evaluate stimulus/tarp money. It doesn't matter who the president is/was .... 89 cents out of every dollar is for administration ... is that really how you want your tax dollars spent? ... Regardless of how much you may like the particular project the money is being spent on.
A good idea for the most part. Not necessarily the most worthy cause to give the money too but not a bad cause. I have to wonder what happens in case of a forest fire. It could keep many animals from escaping. I suppose the chances are pretty slim.
This Stimulas crap is out of control can we help our schools for heck sakes what is more important keeping deer offf the road or educating our kids less students per class more teachers per students hay ding ding ding what a great way to spend all this "free"(what ever) money What a joke !!!!!!!
@one mans thoughts - One man. Would you share one thing with me, please. How do you know who disagreed with you? I guess I am just too much of a newbee to know what to look for.
@one mans thoughts - You dont to your question, but thats because who ever puts it down dont have an explanation to there disagreement other than well they have no answere
Glad this is what we're pissing stimulus money away on. Forget the economy, U.S. citizens, reviving the social security we pay into that we wont be seeing and border security, oh wait the borders to mexico are "unofficially" dissolved. Next thing you know we will be pissing it away on the new trashy healthcare system Obama wants, migrant workers and illegal aliens, and ridiculous highspeed rail projects...Oh yeah, we already do that.
Bemho where are you getting your enlightenment?

Better yet, just stop stealing my hard-earned money and let me be free.

I thought those animal loving hippies would of loved the fence, but didn't take into consideration how the fence is actually holding them back.
Their plans are continually frustrated.
lots of land
lots of land

CAR!!! OWWW
how many jobs were created or saved thanks to the porkulus spending?
Five, six, three?
Maybe this was to appease the special interest animal loving liberals.
Thank your elected officials for sneaking this one in as well.

Have you actually ever driven in the mountains? You can be driving the speed limit or under and an animal will dart out in front of you.
If you are going to make a post, at least make it an intelligent post.
