Do you ever think about the car accidents (potential deaths) that this fence might help to mitigate- by keeping the animals off the road, thus keeping a driver from swerving, rolling, dying, or inadvertantly killing someone else, etc..? For once, pull your head out and think outside the box. That does seem like alot to ask from you, however. Nevermind.

@chaddyblaze - There are fatalities every year from people hitting large animals or swerving to avoid them, I would think it's more about that than saving animals.

Add up the bill picked up by Utah for emergency and hospital services for people killed or injured because of hitting large animals and it probably eclipses the fence cost.

So this fence is intended to cut back on roadkill? I don't travel that area a lot but I would like to know exactly what animals it would deter from entering the road. It seems to me that most of the road kill i see is large game like dear and elk. A small 4 foot fence won't even slow thoes animals down. Sounds like a big waste of money to me.

Funded by federal stimulus money? That really does not convey the correct source of funds. Makes it sound so easy.

One thing we should all be very aware of is that the Fed Gov't can only spend what it first takes from the productive base in society. This money came from hardworking fellow Americans - and it was not voluntarily given - it was taken by threat of force.

I am not arguing for or against the merits of the project in and of itself. I am suggesting that, as a people, we should not forget where the money really comes from.

History has proven that governments typically do one thing really well - grow in size and power and feed off their "subjects".

It should be painfully clear now that any handout provided by the gov't comes with strings attached. Those strings are generally a reduction in personal liberties and freedoms.

Those who have lost their freedom would prize it above all else. Those who are free seem ever ready to trade their freedom for promises of security - which generally prove false and both are lost.

Ridiculous yes. So are deer fences the ones that can’t jump over it just go to the end of the fence and cross there you just move the problem of where the deer cross the road.

Deer will not use a tunnel. Predators live in holes and their natural instinct for survival is to avoid holes. Tunnels do not work either.

In many instances, game fences designed to prevent animal vehicle collisions also disrupt animal migration corridors. Preventing game from migrating from their summer range to their winter range has caused the complete eradication of local deer herds in some areas in the state. They should have also designed a way for the animals to safely cross the freeway to prevent the complete crash of that population. I saw nothing in the article to indicate either way whether there was an animal crossing.

Most of you have clearly never seen the fence....or understand how many serious car accidents the fence will eliminate. This is not a new concept...these fences are proven. Deer and Moose have caused many serious accidents on this stretch of road...many serious injuries...and several fatalities in the last decade.

$395,000 spent here may very well be one of the best values of the stimulous.

If you want to complain about wasted money....start looking at those $30,000 atv's that homeland security is buying for local police departments. They only seem to use them for parade's!! There is wasted money.

@Nobadges - I have seen the fence and I drive parley's twice a day. There are many more deer accident-prone areas like 40 over to Heber. However, although the fence may not be a bad idea, it's implementation is lacking. In fact it is not tall enough to keep out deer or elk, nor is it strong enough to keep out a moose. It will keep out medium size animals like racoons, foxes, coyotes, etc. Maybe it will deter last minute darting out. I have had this happen twice to me in the last week on 40.

That being said, is this the best use of the money? How many jobless could have been taught a new skill to be employable? How many poor could have been housed and fed? ... But of course if the government does it, the money is really thrown away then. Do you know that for entitlement programs ... the various types: food stamps, affordable housing, etc. ... that only 11 cents of every dollar goes to the people in need. The rest goes to administrative costs of the government. Reputable charities range 11 to 22 cents of each dollar for administrative costs. Consider this when you evaluate stimulus/tarp money. It doesn't matter who the president is/was .... 89 cents out of every dollar is for administration ... is that really how you want your tax dollars spent? ... Regardless of how much you may like the particular project the money is being spent on.
