SALT LAKE CITY -- Solitude Ski Resort opened its slopes Saturday for some Halloween skiing and boarding.

"We opened up our lifts way ahead of schedule on October 31st," said Nick Como with Solitude.

Solitude Ski Resort opened its lifts to pass holders to give them a first shot at the season's first snow. That makes it the first resort to open its lifts this season.

"We've never skied a lift in Utah in October so we wanted to come up with the family and ski Halloween," said skier Allen Marler of Cottonwood Heights.

Many that hit the slopes said it was the perfect start to a day of fun.

"It's great -- we get to go home and go trick-or-treating," said Lori Marler.

Skiers and snowboarders alike went out to enjoy the run. Some just couldn't resist the opportunity that skiing on Halloween presented.

"Just be up here on the mountain in a Halloween costume -- I've always wanted to do it but never had the chance," said Corey Christensen, a skiing gorilla.

Debi Christensen strapped on her boots as a banana.

"We thought that'd be hilarious to chase each other down the slope wearing these," she said.

The event was free for pass holders. Solitude officially opens its lifts to everyone on Nov. 6.
