UDOT construction season nears end
October 26th, 2009 @ 6:30am

Update: Southbound Interstate 15 in North Salt Lake reopened around 2 a.m. Monday after crews successfully moved the bridge at Highway 89. They finished about three hours ahead of schedule.

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah Department of Transportation is a step closer to wrapping up the road construction season.

Crews shut down a portion of southbound Interstate 15 Sunday night in order to move another bridge into place.

UDOT is replacing the bridge that connects Highway 89 over I-15 to make room for an express lane.

Sunday afternoon, crews prepared for the big move -- which will require the bridge to be lifted on a hydraulic system before it is slowly moved down the freeway and into place.

While the move will take most of the night, UDOT said it will take considerably less time than the old method.

Richard Manser, a UDOT project manager said, "We're cutting months off of time and construction by doing this and we hope it's a success."

The freeway is expected to be back up and running around 5 a.m. Monday, just in time for the morning commute.

Meanwhile, Interstate 80 opened to traffic again Sunday following a night of road projects.

Saturday night, crews moved the second piece of the 2300 East ramp into place.

They also took advantage of the closure and installed overhead signs and did some maintenance on the 2000 East bridge.

"We're just very excited about it. It's the end of the construction season for us. We're getting ready for snow removal operations. So it's nice to have these wrapped up and ready to go, so we can open the roads back to the public," said Adan Carrillo, spokesman for UDOT.

Carrillo said all of the projects should be completed soon.
