Roy teacher accused of sexual misconduct with student

ROY -- The same day a 47-year-old Ogden High School teacher was accused of having a sexual relationship with a then 16- or 17-year-old former student, a Roy Jr. High teacher has been accused of the same thing with a former jr. high student.

"They're victims. They're preyed upon. They're manipulated. They're not, by societal standards, mature enough to make some of these adult decisions on their own," said Roy police Chief Greg Whinham said. "We've been in this weird world where we're having one a week become the headline in the paper. There's definitely a problem."

Ogden police and the Ogden City School District are investigating allegations of an inappropriate relationship between an Ogden High teacher and a student who graduated in 2008.

Whinham said 45-year-old Ken Taylor, a technology and wood shop teacher at Roy Jr. High, manipulated the girl into having sex with him.

The Weber School District learned of the alleged relationship at the beginning of September and immediately put Taylor on administrative leave. Taylor resigned 3 days later.

"It's always a shock," said Weber District spokesman Nate Taggart. "Teachers need to meet a higher expectation in the way that they are dealing with their students."

Taylor was a teacher at the school for five years, and the district had never had any problems with him before.

The now 17-year-old girl was a student at Roy Jr. High, and Chief Whinham says the relationship may have gone on two to three years.

"In the event that you have a young person, no matter what their belief system is, if they're having sexual relationships with a person my age, that's not right," Whinham said.

Roy police filed six felony counts of unlawful sexual activity with a child against Taylor.

In the Ogden High School case, the alleged victim--who is now of age--is reportedly living with the teacher in question.

Police said it was yet another case in the news, that of a 62-year-old Layton High School teacher who married an 18-year-old former student that prompted the Ogden investigation.
