SALT LAKE COUNTY -- There's good news for the future of the massive Mountain View Corridor Project in Salt Lake County. The Utah Department of Transportation announced Wednesday it will be able to build the first phase of the road farther north than initially planned.
The first phase will now span from Redwood Road in Bluffdale to 5400 South in Kearns. The original plan for the first phase was to extend to only 9000 South.
The additional five miles north now makes the Salt Lake County section 15 miles long.
UDOT says it is able to build the road farther for several reasons. They have modified the design to build the roadway at the same level as intersections with frontage roads, rather than a freeway design with interchanges.
At a later date, UDOT will convert the road into a freeway.
Construction costs are also more competitive right now, and that brings down costs for materials on the $730 million project.
Construction on Salt Lake County portion of the Mountain View Corridor will start in the spring of 2010 and is expected to be completed in 2013.
Construction on the 3 mile Utah County segment at 2100 North in Lehi starts this December. The road will run east-west from Redwood Road to the I-15 1200 West exit. It will be completed in the fall of 2011.
When completed, the corridor will extend 35 miles north and south from I-80 in Salt Lake County to Lehi in Utah County.
The first phase of improvements will provide two lanes in each direction and at-grade intersections. Also during this first phase, UDOT will preserve adequate right-of-way to convert the initial at-grade facility to a full freeway.
The conversion to a full freeway will happen during a future phase as funding became available.
