SALT LAKE CITY -- It was day two at Ute football camp and unlike Thursday, it was much cooler weather. The Utes hope that continues into Saturday when they put on the shoulder pads for the first time.

There was one noticeable change Friday morning. True freshman quarterback Jordan Wynn practiced with the second group, while JC transfer Terrance Cain worked with the early squad along with Corbin Louks. Offensive coordinator Dave Schramm told me there's nothing to read into the switch, it was just a chance for the QB's to work with all the receivers.

Coach Kyle Whittingham said it's simply a plan to give all the quarterbacks a chance to work with the first team. Wynn said the switch, "gave me a chance to get a lot more reps today. I took most of them so it was a lot of fun, I enjoyed that, and I just try to take advantage of it. I think I had a good practice and I'll go to the film room and see how I really did."

Kathy Aiken goes one-on-one with Utah's Matt Asiata and his ascension to becoming the Ute's featured running back.

One player who looks ready to go is running back Matt Asiata. Heading into his senior season, Asiata comes into camp 12 pounds lighter than last season and currently weighs around 218 lbs. When asked why he lost the weight, he said it was due to the speed work he did in the offseason. He said gaining more quickness was his main priority heading into his final season. We'll have much more on Asiata Saturday night on SportsBeat.

The coaches poll was released today and the Utes were picked 18th, one spot behind TCU. That is the best preseason ranking in school history and marks just the second time that the Utes have cracked a major preseason poll.

Coach Kyle Whittingham said he pays little attention to the early polls calling it a "crap shoot." He said he's "one of those guys who don't feel there should be a poll until the fourth or fifth week of the season." By the way, Whittingham doesn't have a vote this year. He says the coaches that vote are picked randomly and his name was not selected this season.

Utah, which has finished a season in the top 10 three times and the top 25 four times, first appeared in a preseason Coaches' poll in 2004 at No. 21.

This is also the first time since the inception of the Bowl Championship Series that three teams from a non-automatic qualifying conference have been ranked to begin the year (#17 TCU, #18 Utah and #24 BYU).

Two former players were watching practice Friday. Quarterback Brian Johnson and kicker Louie Sakoda. Hard to believe with all his success with the Utes that Sakoda is not in an NFL camp. Utes are back at it Saturday for Day 3, then in the afternoon it's the team's official media day.
