Utah mother sentenced to 15 years to life for killing toddler son

SALT LAKE CITY -- A young mother was sentenced Friday for the death of her 23-month-old son. Adrianna Lucero will serve the maximum penalty for murder and child abuse.

The teenage mother was handed two sentences. For the murder of her young son Alejandro, she'll serve 15 years to life in prison. She was also sentenced one to 15 years for child abuse.

Lucero sobbed as she stood before the judge saying she is not guilty and wants justice for her son. After sentencing, she was taken away in handcuffs. Her family left the courtroom tearful and upset.

"How can you give somebody almost 30 years, you know? In my heart I know she didn't do it," said Alice Griego, Lucero's aunt.

Lucero's family says her ex-boyfriend, Sergio Martinez-Gonzales, is the person responsible. Gonzales wasn't present and has not been charged.

Last summer, Lucero was at her ex-boyfriends apartment in Kearns. Prosecutors said she lost control and snapped the spine of her little boy, Alejandro. The boy also had signs of past abuse including bruises and a fractured rib.

The judge recommended Lucero's sentences be served concurrently.
