SALT LAKE CITY -- Brandon Christopher Wallace, 25, will serve a maximum of 30 years in prison for his involvement in 2006 shooting death of 25-year-old Marchello Cecala.
Wallace pleaded guilty to the second-degree felony manslaughter charge as part of a plea bargain. His sentence for that charge was one to 15 years in prison, running consecutive to another one to 15 years for robbery.
The family of the victim was in court to hear that sentence from the judge. Cecala's nephew Cody Olson says the punishment was too light for the crime he committed.
Olson says, "I think his sentence was a little bit weak. It wasn't as good as it should have been … He only got one to 15. I think it should have been life, like my uncle's life was taken. It was over a cell phone that my uncle got killed for."
Court documents say Cecala and Wallace got into an argument at party in Murray on Sept. 17, 2006. When Cecala tried to drive away, Wallace shot him through the heart and then handed the gun to a buddy, who then continued to shoot until Cecala ended up driving into a tree.
Olson says the only thing that makes his family pleased with Monday's sentence is the fact that Wallace will be serving the time consecutively.
"So back to back is how he's going to serve, which is pretty much the best news out of everything we got in there today," said Olson.
Olson says he has been waiting three years for Monday's sentence and would like to move forward now.
