Trip to the gas station costs Utah man thousands
One tank of gas cost a Utah man thousands of dollars. The good news is he'll get the money back; the bad news is he's not alone.

@trytorelax - One of the great advantages of credit cards over debit cards is that if there is a dispute, I keep my money while we resolve it. Not always so with a debit card.

And don't do auto pay except to a credit card. It is easy enough--and prudent--to check statements before paying them.

We use electronic payments for most things now, but they are entered manually each month as needed. Nobody is authorized to automatically withdraw money from my bank account.

@change screenname to cowboyup - If you're buying gas at Maverick, it's probably because of their 2-4cents off per gallon. Combine it with a 5% gas rewards credit card and get an additional 12-15cents off.

@change screenname to cowboyup - A debit card is bad news when it comes to fraudulent or erroneous charges. Yes you can eventually sort it out if a mistake is made but in the mean time, get ready for a pack of trouble for weeks on end, as noted in this story.

Plan on at least 30 days before things are resolved and probably two or three times longer. Until it gets sorted out your money is GONE and the bills go unpaid unless you have the resources elsewhere to cover them.

@trytorelax - Why are youi buying gas from Maverik anyway.
Dont you know that this is bad gas.
For the few pennies you save per gallon, you loose more from the loss of power and fuel economy.
But if you want you vehicle to run like Sh.....t, go ahead and fillerup at the Maverik.

Also, do you remember the crappy advertising campain a couple of years ago with a female named Brittney I think. They played big on her big chest etc.
Why do those people that admit that they make more money on Cigs and beer, than on the gas they sell at the Maverik.... why are they always in church acting so high and mighty...?? Why not look at their wifes and daughters, the same way they wanted you to look at their girl on their ad.
Just not right, just like their gas.

Thanks.

@Silver Fox - Buy your gas from corperations that do not purchase oil from the Mid East.
Everytime you fill up, you are funding those countries that want to kill Americans and destroy America.
I read a list at one time, I am sorry I do not have that list anymore, because I use one that was on that list. This is Sinclair.
I also very closely monitor fuel usage and drving conditioins, as I drive a company car.
Sinclair has provided better results than others.

PS. Do not complain about our economy, then climb into your car with a foreign brand name, suck on a plastic disposable water bottle, purchace cheap chineese products etc. Buy American cars exclusivly, and American products when possible.

@Silver Fox - I have a 2000 Corolla with 101,000 miles on it. I don't buy Maverick gas because a petrochemical chemist told me some 30 years ago that it was junk. I'm sure things have changed, but I still don't buy Maverick gas.

Back to the car... I've fed the car a steady diet of Costco gas. Well, it began to run crummy, and got so bad it was setting the "check engine" light on my Corolla. I changed spark plugs and ran several cans of fuel injector cleaner through it. It helped some, but it was still running poorly.

I stopped one day and filled up with Chevron, and halfway through the tank, I could tell the difference. It's on it's third tank of Chevron regular now, and it's back to normal.

The extra nickel a gallon seems to be worth it for my Corolla. I thought I was going to have to spend over $400 for new injectors.

That's my anecdotal evidence, but I only will put Chevron in my Corolla. I still put Costco gas in the Sienna. 30,000 miles and no problems.

@Silent Taxpayer - I work for a company that transports gas to several different vendors and guess where it all comes from? The same refineries. We load at Chevron, Holly, Flying J, and Tesoro and that gas is going to all the stations that everyone of us goes to. Sometimes we will load Holly and then put Tesoro on top and it all goes into the same tank at the end.
All the stations get their gas from whoever is selling it cheaper that day. That's what it's all about. Being able to save .0045 cents per gallon.
What do you think about your precious Chevron now?

so after loosing almost as much as the merchant mischarged me in fees. im left wondering why we even allow credit card processing company's to do these things with no accountability.

@CC4USA - They're all money-grubbing, nickel-and-dime-you-to-death, faceless, care-less, profit-motivated jerks.

I've had my money in America First since they were Federal Employees Credit Union. As soon as they started offering "drafts" (checking) I yanked my cash out of the bank it was in and never looked back.

I pay off my credit card monthly. One month I accidentally paid a few bucks too little and so they charged me interest for the month. I made a quick phone call and they removed the charges.

When interest rates drop, I can to the credit union, fill out a form, and they will drop the rate on my loans. Try that with a bank!

I had some cash in a savings account at First Security Bank once upon a time so I could use the ATM at work. I made sure to always keep over the $100 minimum in the acct to avoid their fees. One day I checked my account and it was down some $40. I asked them what was up and they said, "We increased the minimum to $200". I complained they never told me and they said they sent out letters. I never saw the letter. My money will never again go to a bank. Sadly, I did not take my home loan with my credit union. I should have.

@trytorelax - 'a computer glitch' is written into the program...anytime there is a billing inconsistency it
AUTOMATICALLY ERRORS in their favor..

has anybody ever been undercharged for anything or been under billed for utilities? if this guy had only put $10 worth of gas in he might not have caught it....

if every card billing company made a $5 dollar 'mistake' and even if half the people caught the error..the rest is 'free' money...and the amount of hassle involved in getting that $5 error corrected can be a major effort.

and yes it has happened to me

I know taking the receipt would not have helped this man, but you can't be too careful. I believe the $1 had Washington, The $5 had Lincoln, and it's been so long since I handled money that I cannot remember the rest. I also think they had coins too for fractional amounts. There was a copper looking coin called the penny worth 1/100 of a dollar, a nickel colored coin called the nickel worth 1/20 of a dollar and I think they even had a $1 coin that at one time was nearly the size of a quarter then they made it slightly larger and gold in color because it was confused with quarters and half dollars.

The guy in Utah had his money back in his account the next day. For you to say make me an offer or get a lawsuit is ludicrous! This is technology and it is not perfect, if you do not expect glitches in technology then you are a very close minded person. I drove an airport shuttle van for over seven years. I averaged about 100,00 miles per year. Fueled at Maverik about 60-70% of the time. Never had a problem. I also bought lots of chevron gas back in the days when their gas was 2-4 cents per gallon more than others. The last few years, however, the price difference became too large. On North Temple and Redwood road the gas at the Chevron on the NW corner is sometimes as much as 20 cents per gallon higher than as the other stations at that intersection. I was in Elko, Nevada last Friday. Gas at the Chevron next to the Red Lion Hotel was 3.49.9/gallon for regular unleaded. Two blocks to the west, Sinclair was 275.9 Tesero was $2.76.9/gallon, Sinclair was $2.79.9/gallon and Conoco WAS $2.69.9/gallon. The gas all comes from the same refineries. I have seen Flying J and Holly trucks at all different station, no matter what brand they may advertise.

I gassed up at that same store one time and went inside to buy something else. I use a debit card and I always look at the receipt and then chuck it in the garbage. When I went inside and the clerk asked me if I got gas and I said yes. She asked me if I paid for it outside and I said yes. She then asked me for a receipt and I told her I looked at it and threw it in the trash. She then said "Yeh right" and asked me to go get it. I told her to cancel my inside purchase and that I was going to drive home to Stansbury Park on I-215/I-80 and to call the cops and have me arrested if she didn't believe me. BTW I'm a sales professional mature male in a new vehicle. This was the worst service experience I've ever had. I wrote a letter to the company and to no surprise didn't get a response. They have the worst lines and customer service of any business I have ever used. The credit/debit card issue does not surprise me at all. With service that bad it wouldn't take a leap of faith for me to think it was intentional due to the caliber of people they seem to attract as employees. The store in Stansbury is very busy and it is not unusual to have 20 people waiting in line with one cashier and two or three other employees shooting the breeze or emptying cans outside. You have to check the experation date on your milk or it will expire before you can pay for it. I would shop there only if I ran out of gas and had to walk by it with a gas can.

It would seem to me that if the same charge runs through about 850 times, the credit union should
have some method in place to NOT APPROVE it. If there
were #7300 in his account and the gas was $86, that
is what it would take. This shouldn't be allowed to
happen on the credit union's end. I kind of think it
is more their fault than Maverick.

@saylahvee - You would think that it would be flagged as suspicious activity. I remember making a purchase that was $1200.00 and I had to contact my credit union because it was flagged as a suspicious activity on my account. I believe another time I purchased items from amazon that were a total of $50 and since they were out of stock on 1 item, they charged my credit card one time for the first item as it shipped, then the next day they had the other item in stock and shipped it they charged the remainder of the price for my order and it got flagged for some reason which I assume would be that they found 2 transactions charged within 24 hours by the same merchant. You would think that their system would detect multiple charges by the same merchant for the same amount 850 times and flag it as suspicious.

@brotherscollision - I think the main reason he went to KSL was because he used a debit card to make the purchase and since a debit card is directly paid from your bank account, he had legitimate transactions get denied due to lack of funds in his account. The moral of the story is that it is better to use a credit card (if you have one). Then if something like this happens, you won't end up having a bunch of legitimate transactions get denied and end up having transactions denied, paying collection fees and bank fees while the problem is resolved. Of course it would be nice if Maverik reimbursed him for all the collection fees and bank fees that he encountered while they fixed the problem.

I’ve had similar problems with maverick country stores, I’ve gotten fuel at different stores only to find out that they charged my account $100 sometimes more causing my account to go under (this has happened at least a dozen times). Then when that happens the good ol service charge takes effect causing a snowball effect when I have other charges going through. It really is a pain to have to call the bank to have the charges reversed but the real pain is that they tie up that amount of funds in my account so I can’t use my card!!!!!!!!!!!! I try not to get fuel at maverick anymore just for that reason and the bad gas thing well it's just not worth it; I didn't know about the bad gas thing until I read some of these post you suck maverick.
I have brought it up to several of the cashiers only for them to say will look into that……Right and my refund check is in the mail to!!!!!!!

@Telockwood - From experience, the $100 is a pre-authorization that happens when you run your card through at the pump. This will happen any where. This should not cause you problems, it is up to your bank to release the funds when the transaction is complete. This pre-auth is to insure that you have the funds available to pay for the gas. Should they just trust anyone??? Who does these days??? The company name is spelled Maverik not Maverick, get it right if you want to complain.
