SALT LAKE CITY -- A fast-moving storm made its way across northern Utah Friday evening, drenching large areas with rain and accompanied by thunder and lightning strikes.
In Pleasant View, so much rain came down so fast it caused 500 West near 3800 North to buckle under the weight of the water. It was unsafe to drive on, so was shut down.
In Logan, lightening struck the Terrace Grove Assisted Living Center, sparking a small fire. Fire crews cut through the roof and found charred insulation and roofing materials.
Fifty residents were evacuated to the Wellness Center next door. Firefighters say the center suffered between $25,000 and $50,000 dollars in damage.
Further south in Salt Lake City, the Unitarian Universalist Association is holding general assembly here at the Salt Palace. They put up a 70-foot banner that blew down and broke out some windows in the tower. Salt Lake City fire fighters didn't want broken glass to fall on people, so they spent the evening removing the broken glass.
And in West Valley City we couldn't find one person on a ride at the annual West Fest celebration. Everyone had run for cover from the rain! The rides were all shut down, and the game and food booths were left empty as folks huddled to wait out the sudden storm that moved in.
We did, however, find one family at West Fest who didn't mind getting drenched.
"The rain is fun! I like playing in the rain," Timber Wold said.
Robert Wold told us, "Kids wanna come down and have a caramel apple -- been waiting for the caramel apple for a week, since we heard the Fest was coming. Doesn't bother us, we're diehards!"
When the storm finally passed through, we were left with a beautiful rainbow that spanned the Salt Lake Valley. The Anderson family in South Jordan sent in pictures of the huge rainbow.
KSL meteorologist Kevin Eubank says warmer and drier air is expected move in Saturday making for a beautiful weekend.
