SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah's next governor isn't sold on global warming.
Current Lt. Gov. Gary Herbert aired his skepticism at a panel discussion of the Western Governors' Association on Monday. He told the group it appears to him science on global warming is not necessarily conclusive.
The governors have backed a resolution supporting efforts to deal with global climate change. Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer told the Deseret News that Herbert's position would not affect the governors' efforts already under way on climate change.
Herbert tells the Deseret News Utahns agree with him. He says the environmental talk sounds good until gas prices hit $4 a gallon. He told the paper he's concerned about increasing energy costs to deal with climate change.
Herbert isn't commenting yet about possibly pulling Utah out of the Western Climate Initiative. It was signed by current Gov. Jon Huntsman. Huntsman is awaiting Senate confirmation to become U.S. Ambassador to China. WCI seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15 percent by 2020.
