SALT LAKE CITY -- State education officials recently had an embarrassing audit, so they fired the auditors. Friday they will talk about new changes.
The legislative audit revealed school employees with criminal backgrounds working around children. State Board Member David Thomas says they now want internal auditors instead, to catch those things before they are made public.
"It provides a process by which the internal auditors are hired by the superintendent, but with the consent of the audit committee," he said.
He also said, "It can prevent, yes, the State Board being embarrassed by something that comes out, because we'll already know about it and we'll have already fixed it before it ever reaches that."
Thomas says there will still be checks and balances. The Board will also talk about those criminal backgrounds on Friday and figure out a way to stop those from slipping through.
