SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Security guards are being hired to protect a building in Saratoga Springs where thousands of gallons of explosives have been sitting for years.
The 25,000 gallons of explosives sits inside a shed-like building above several Saratoga Springs subdivisions. For years the building has been protected by some padlocks and a chain link fence.
Apparently city officials didn't know what was there, but Mayor Tim Parker says he doesn't want residents to worry.
"The explosive material that remains there is fairly benign," he said.
The EPA is now paying for security to protect the building while they figure out how to clean the place up. They're also going to notify residents in the area of the cleanup, by knocking doors and with flyers. The city will also be posting information on its Web site.
The plant owner Merrill Cook is hoping he can still sell the explosive material.
The EPA is hoping to have all the explosives cleaned up within the next 60 days.
