Boarding school employee accused of sex with student
May 15th, 2009 @ 12:56pm

ERDA -- A supervisor at a boarding school in Erda is charged with raping one of the students there.

Police say Jonathan Carver, 29, was a house parent at Alpine Academy, and that during his time there he had sex several times with a 17-year-old female student.

According to the Tooele Transcript Bulletin, a probably cause statement alleges Carver began having sexual relations with the victim in October 2008.

The relationship was discovered when the girl left the school and her parents became concerned that Carver was still contacting her. They contacted police.

Carver is charged with four counts of rape, two counts of forcible sodomy and tampering with a witness. He made his first court appearance in 3rd District Court on Wednesday and was appointed a public defender. The judge set bail at $100,000, cash only.

Tooele County Deputy Attorney Gary Searle told the Transcript Bulletin that while 17-year-olds can legally consent to sex, in this case he says it amounts to rape because of Carver's position at the academy.
