(Photo courtesy AP)SALT LAKE CITY -- A Provo company that makes electric hybrid engines for trucks showed off its new electric Hummer at the Society Automotive Engineers 2009 World Congress in Detroit Monday.
Raser Technologies Chairman Kraig Higginson says his company has been working on this project for several years. The new electric hybrid Hummer is a big, heavy vehicle that gets better gas mileage than most small, fuel-efficient cars
"You can't put a load of Sheetrock or a load of plywood in a Toyota Prius," Higginson said.
Among those in Detroit taking a good look at the electric H3 was California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. "[He] made that comment to me a couple of times: ‘How do I get one? How do I get one? Can I get one of these?' Higginson said.
He says the electric motor will add $12,000 to $15,000 to the base price of whatever vehicle they put it in, but he says government rebates and incentives for fuel-efficient vehicles would help eliminate a good portion of the extra cost.
