SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The BLM says vandals have defaced a rock art panel near Vernal.

The vandalism occurred sometime in the last ten days.

Blaine Phillips, an archaeologist with the Bureau of Land Management, says names and dates were engraved across the panel, basically destroying it.

The pictographs are one of four examples of the Barrier Canyon-style of rock art found in the Vernal area.

The style dates back several thousand years and is made up of ghostly looking human-sized figures with no legs.

Authorities are trying to determine if the panel is on government or private property, which will determine which agency will investigate the act.

Anyone with information should contact the BLM's Vernal field office at 435-781-4400.
