Ogden City officials want governor to veto CO detector bill

OGDEN -- A bill that would make renters responsible for keeping up their carbon monoxide detectors could get vetoed if certain Ogden officials have their way. The bill in question is House Bill 402.

Kirk Cullimore, with the Utah Apartment Association, said, "I think there are some people in Ogden City Council that are unhappy about this, but I don't think they've reviewed the bill closely enough."

Some city officials have been quoted as saying it will create conflict and dump more work on building inspectors in charge of enforcing codes.

But Cullimore says tenants don't always cooperate with inspections. He said, "It would be a constant battle to try and get tenants to allow a landlord in to check the little things."

Cullimore says tenants have been know to take batteries out of smoke detectors, and he says landlords shouldn't be held liable if tenants do the same to CO detectors.
