@Prince Ali - ...isn't THE PROBLEM THAT MEXICO REPRESENTS, but in order to be PC, the U.S. had to invoke this rule on a border that has states and provinces sharing much information from drivers license files. A Canada Border Services officer will know if someone from even the deep south has a DUI conviction on their record. The same could be said of a U.S. Customs & Border Protection Officer with respects to someone from the Quebec outback who has been nabbed by the RCMP for too many fights in hockey games or barroom brawls.
In addition to a passport, those crossing the border from Mexico need to know English!
@TheLastLaugh - Canada is a popular entrance to the USA even for illegals. The reason apparently is that Canada accepts flights from countries the USA does not (ie Cuba) and is more open. For a certain fee your "service" that gets you into the USA sends you to Canada first (in some cases long enough to get residency there so that you can legally enter the USA.
@Dcnielsen - U.S. Customs & Border Protection officers can nab these people even under the current regulations of having a valid state/province drivers license and birth certificate or record. If someone living in Canada is originally from Pakistan, Iran or some other terrorist sponsoring nation they better have an approved visa from one of the consular offices if they wish to get in. MEXICO is and reamins the biggest probelm for illegal immigration into the U.S. and we've long needed to invoke the passport rule along our southern border, not to mention an English language litmus test. The problem is all the lawsuits from the Hispanic rights activists that would have come into play had they left Canada out of this initiative (think about that one---people like Tony Yapias). So being PC is the reason for including Canada which is a total crock of crap!
@chucke20 - ...Don't give these people there too many ideas since they want nothing more than to shelter their kids from the rest of the "real world!" :-)
@Simon Cowels mean Brother - They check them because you have them, but they want your tourist dollars and Dr. DON is correct, this isn't a issue of them requiring you have them this is a issue of your government requiring you have them to come home.
Sorry, but yes your government screws you again. You can run across the boarder with nothing for paperwork but to come in the front door your treated like the dirt you are.... a tax paying citizen.
@Simon Cowels mean Brother - because countries like Canada won't let you into their country unless they know you can leave. If you dont have a passport to get back home Canada denies you entry
and also the new passports are chipped (RFID). They, as in the people who scan them, will be able to see all kinds of information about you. Our government is becoming "big brother" whether we like it or not.
Very scary...
@Paulsgoddess - They can find that same information by typing in your name. Chips, barcodes, mag strips, just eliminate the need for all that typing and speed up the process of getting through immigration.
As one who has been in that line many times, I'm all for speeding up the process. However, I will draw the line when they want to insert a chip inside me.
is another way of keeping track of your where abouts and should you exceed your stay from what you told immigration. They will come looking for you. I travel to the Caribbean, Bermuda, Mexico, Canada and South America a great deal. Most of the countries are very friendly. I have had more issues with certain states then any country. Having a passport is helpful when filing out an I-9 form.
Will this hurt travel? Cruising for the weekend? The Caribbean islands? It should be good for places like Puerto Rico and such but this just makes traveling harder. Good thing I have no money and can't go anywhere anyway.
Puerto Rico is part of the United States...you do not need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico. You just need a government issued photo ID...like a driver's license. You'll go through agriculture...but other then that...it's like going through any other U.S. state. Unless you are going on a boat somewhere outside Puerto Rico.
I had to have a passport when i had a layover in canada last july. this actually happened a couple years ago i dont know how it is newsworthy again??? ksl where have you been the last year?
having kids out of control in Mexico and the usa too can be costly. Let him spend time there.
Who are the other families? they said four kids.
I personally love the back lash at mexico and I can 't wait for all the gnaccos to be send home. South America is full of wonderfull people, why do we have to deal with Mexico?
Makes sense, track americans but not illegal foreign nationals. The article said nothing about requireing a passpost to get back in to the US, just to enter other countries. America does not require passports or even a green card to cross our borders. The US has no intention of interfering with illegal aliens forcing their way across our borders. The US has long abandoned their rights of soverignty as a nation, borders are open to every illegal wishing to enter and become wards of the government and tax payers.
Corporate america says we have to have illegals to keep the american workers suppressed, out of jobs, and working for poverty income. We must keep illegals in the US to further damage our economy and keep us from recovering. The US government is dragging its feet and doing nothing to help the economy of the american workers. It's time for business to take a back seat and put the american people first or we will never see any economic recovery.
@Billy_Jack - It's where people GO on these passports that worry me. Dubai is very popular...you couldn't pay me to go there. Or Kuwait. Lebanon. Egypt. Morocco.
@Antenna Girl - Let me explain to those of you who aren't familiar with geography. The nations I mentioned are Islamic and Americans don't win any popularity contests there.
If I'm going to travel to a place that the American Embassy warns me about, I ain't going.
Passport or no passport, travel is very, very, risky now.
