SALT LAKE CITY -- SkyWest Airlines announced Thursday it will reduce its workforce by up to 300 employees at the Salt Lake International Airport.

According to Marisa Snow, Corporate Communications Director for SkyWest, the workforce reduction comes as SkyWest stops its ground operations in the B-Concourse. Those operations include gate operations, baggage handling and tarmac operations.

Snow says anyone affected will be moved from full-time to part-time or put on temporary furlough status, which could last up to three years.

"SkyWest worked closely with Delta to evaluate the SLC ground operation and was able to maintain 75% of our ground handling responsibilities there," says SkyWest President and COO, Chip Childs. "Delta recognizes the quality product our people produce in Salt Lake City, and we will continue our nearly 200 flights out of the Salt Lake City hub, even increasing routes this summer. Our focus today is on minimizing the impact to our people in Salt Lake City, and continuing to produce an exceptional product now and throughout the transition."

All SkyWest flights arriving or departing from the B-Concourse will now be handled by Delta Airline personnel.

Delta will hire 50 employees to handle the extra workload.

SkyWest will continue ground operations with its personnel from the E-Concourse.

SkyWest will operate Delta's recently announced new service from Salt Lake City to Bismarck, Des Moines, El Paso, Fargo, Milwaukee, Nashville and Sioux Falls.
