PROVO -- The gun used in the accidental shooting of Timpview High school student Katelyn Mikolasy, 16, belonged to the shooter's grandfather.

Police say it was a .38-caliber Colt, model 1903, semi-automatic. The pistol, along with a second a Smith & Wesson .38-caliber revolver, were from a collection of firearms owned by the 13-year-old's grandfather.

The grandfather did not know the pistols were missing until after the shooting. He told police he normally keeps the firearms locked in a safe and is unsure on how the pistols were taken from his home.

The grandfather does not live in the same home as the 13-year-old.

The accidental shooting happened at Mikolasy's friend's home Friday night. Police say the the boy with the gun apparently didn't know it was loaded.

Mikolasy was a sophomore at Timpview High School. On Monday, hundreds of Timpview High School students showed up to school wearing their Sunday best to mourn, honor and celebrate the life of their classmate.

There's a memorial set up inside the school where students are writing notes of support for Mikolasy's family.

Her mother, Patsy Brereton, says her daughter was her best friend and, really, a friend to everyone. "I just want them to know that I love them and that I know this is nobody's fault," she said.

Grief counselors were on hand Monday at Timpview High School to help students dealing with the tragic death.

School social worker Heather Frank said a few students have needed the assistance of the district crisis team. But overall, the students are supporting each other.

A viewing for Mickolasy will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11. It will followed by a funeral at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, at the Edgemont South Stake Center in Provo. The stake center is located at 2950 North Canyon Rd.
