New blood welcome by me... Hatch is now a career politician, and is completely ineffective in providing the kind of representation our state deserves. And while I don't know a great deal about Peter Ashdown, I know several people who have worked for him and believe him to be a good man would make a great candidate and Senator. In my book, we need new blood in this position, and Peter certainly gets my nod!

Good For Utah @Jeff N. - I agree 30 years is a long time to serve in the senate, But it is good for Utah if Hatch Stays in office. He will be chair of the Finance committee and can send a lot of jobs and money to Utah as he has worked so hard to do in the past. A freshman Politian has little power or influence in D.C. regardless of how qualified they are. We need Hatch for his influence and can not afford to let other states wield the power in the U.S. senate.

That's the problem with Congress @Don W. - Congress takes too much money from us, and then the senior Senators can funnel cash back to their states. It is a criminal enterprise that redistributes money from state to state. Utah money should stay in Utah and Kentucky money should stay in Kentucky and the Federal Government can stick to providing that which is Constitutionally required and nothing more. Congress does not abide by the Constitution and they should be held accountable if not the voters then by law enforcement.

Sincerely,

Floyd

UtahDebate Or you could read an online debate at www.utahdebate.org. Where was Scott Bradley? He could easily trash Hatch.

Debate It is all well and good what Hatch is debating
What we need to hear is what he has done for Utah in 30 years?
Quite clear this debate tells you what he does for us
His music is first and he rides on the tails of what others are doing
It is time we have a Utah Senitor that works for Utahns as well
Ashdown is the only real choice this election year
Give Hatch the boot
Vote for Ashdown

@Larry M. -
He loves his music but he works very hard for us here in Utah and in 30 years has not forgotten why he wanted to go to D.C. in the first place. Don’t for a minute think he is riding on the coat tails of someone else, he is always out in front taking the lead. If you don’t like politicians who follow take another look at Senator Bennett.

@Don W. - He has taken the lead, you're quite right. He took the lead in the INDUCE Act, for instance, that would hold programmers and manufacturers responsible for crimes the users might commit. He wants you to go to jail if you download a single unauthorized song from the internet (something that would be very easy to accidentally do). He wants to make it legal to blow up computers engaged in file-swapping, whether the owner is guilty or not.

He also took the lead in trying to make the senate a rubber stamp for judicial nominations -- which would have destroyed the separation of powers that protects us. That move proved so controversial that a bi-partisan group came together from both sides to make a compromise and prevent it at all costs.

Sure, he takes the lead, but where he leads, I don't want to follow!

Don W @Don W. - I know all about Hatch
Dead beat
All of them are
Hatch has the idea he can not be un seated
Time for a change on this guy
I have had dealings with Hatch
He has no conscience
You need to look at this guys record
Nothing for the people in Utah or in America that needs to be done

I Saw The Debate Hatch is more than scary, he is greasy-evil. He is power hungry, self-serving, and antagonistic. And he has supported virtually everything Bush has done except on stem-cell research. Hmmm. I wonder why.

Fire Hatch!

Interesting. Wish I could've been there, I'd love to hear some of their answers and see how Ashdown did against the old-timer Hatch. Anyone know where we can get more info on the debate??

Shame ... ... on the debate organizers and participants for excluding the four other U.S. Senate candidates on the ballot from this or any forum presented as an opportunity to help voters cast an informed ballot.

The two major parties rig the rules and present a false choice to voters out of a self-serving fear that, if given a real choice, many voters wouldn't choose them.

Good Luck Pete! It will take a miracle, but maybe people will wake up.

I'm afraid Orrin will retire like 'ol Arlen Specter did. With mental acuity less than a Macacca (monkey, just in case you were wonderin!) ;0

what about 3rd parties Its good to see that debates have started now. I wish that debates would include 3rd party candidates not just D and R. I also wish KSL would include a little more than to mention some of the topics covered. I would like to know what their positions were on the topics and some quotes of what they said about issues. I love going to Utahdebate.org and seeing what Pete Ashdown, Julian Hatch, and Roger Price have to say on issues and being able to ask them questions. Not only do you see where they stand on issues but it is from them not twisted by the media. It would be nice to also see Orin Hatch and Scott Bradley get on.

Yeah it sucks... @Mormon J. - I'm convinced that Senators should be term limited. Lifetime politicians make way too many "friends" to be useful to the people who voted them in. Again, good luck to Peter!

Ashdown is still a democrate, he might be a moderate democrate but i will not take any part of putting Harry or Nancy in power. Our country couldn't take that durring these critical times. Sometimes we need to look at the big picture.

@Jeff F. - So you prefer the likes of Ashcoft and Foley? In my opinion its just a good idea to get fresh blood in office from time to time. I think they are more likely to have integrity and work hard. Of course I haven't been a Hatch fan since he defended Clarence Thomas against Anita Hill looooong ago! And of course - I do tend to lean democratic. To each his own.

Jeff thats the best comment on here yet. @Jeff F. - Anything that would help Reid or Pelosi get in power would kill this country. Hatch has done a great job and will continue to fight for us here in Utah. He has done a wonderfull job over the years! Vote Yes for Hatch!!

@Jeff F. - Hatch is a moderate democrat, and one who intends to stick it to the democrats on the national stage. He won't rubber stamp policy from either side of the isle, and a balance of republicans and democrats in the senate is essential to the well-being of our country.
Jeff F.
Report Comment 9:36am - Thu Oct 19th, 2006
@Eric H. - I assume you meant Ashdown. Anyway, it doesn't matter how he votes, if he gets voted in that puts us one step closer to putting Reid in charge. That is something that is not good for the well being of our country.
Eric H.

@Jeff F. - Yes, I meant Ashdown. Sorry. And frankly, I have great difficulty dreaming up a worse administration than the one currently trampling all over everything America stands for.

@Eric H. - Well then try dreaming of a Harry/Nancy Legislative Branch. Nancy is very likely one of the most radically left democrats in this country and Reid isn't much better.
