LOGAN, Utah (AP) -- Utah State University is one of three schools picked by the federal energy department for a nuclear energy research project.
The U.S. Department of Energy's Idaho National Engineering Laboratory study will look at irradiation in a test reactor. Advanced Test Reactor National Scientific User Facility director Todd Allen says the project could increase safety and improve the performance of nuclear energy.
At USU, a research team of faculty and students will study the responses of some metal alloys to radiation.
Professor Heng Ban says USU's selection is a testament to the growth of the school's nuclear engineering research capabilities.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of California-Santa Barbara were also selected for the project.
