Report examines law enforcement recruiting
November 24th, 2008 @ 8:09am

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The University of Utah's Center for Public Policy and Administration has released a report examining the recruitment challenges law enforcement agencies have attracting young people into the profession.

Co-author Angie Stefaniak says members of Generation Y aren't defined by their jobs as much as other generations and frequently change jobs, while police work is seen as a lifelong career. The report also says there's a perception problem that police officers are constantly on call and the work frequently interrupts personal lives.

However, Stefaniak notes that young people also have many traits that work well with law enforcement. She says they're flexible, grew up with busy lifestyles and usually work well in teams.

She wants police departments to use the report to help understand Generation Y and how to recruit them.
