Helpful article. However, there is a better site to check your credit report than the one listed. See this statement from http://www.ftc.gov/freereports:
"Important information from the Federal Trade Commission, the nation’s consumer protection agency: annualcreditreport.com is the ONLY authorized online source for you to get a free credit report under federal law. You can get a free report from each of the three national credit reporting companies every 12 months. Some other sites claim to offer "free" credit reports, but may charge you for another product if you accept a "free" report."
I did not think you could legitimately get a credit report online. Experian tells me those online advertisements are scams and they (experian) send reports to the address on file for security just like dmv sends you your license in the mail (atleast they sent me my new license in the mail to make sure it was going to the address they have in their system) don't even bother with them go straight to the four major credit reporting agencies is what experian always tells me when i get my yearly credit report.
i just signed up at the web site and you can get your credit report online. sheesh i didn't know that and wow last time i got my credit report they only sent reports through the mail. Reason the rep gave for online access is so you can check your report day in/day out if you want instead of waiting ten days for the credit report via mail which by then your credit is screwed up.
I did not even read the backside of my letter when it came until i talked to the rep about five minutes ago who said there should be a web site on the letter you received to sign up. Might as well sign up folks.
My Fiancee' was recently an ID theft victim. They were stealing from his account little by little so that he wouldn't notice it until he got a notice in the mail that an internet site is cancelling his subscription because his card is expired! He had already renewed his card a while ago and never signed up for that site! Even though it was 40 bucks here and there, it is very important that you check those little charges on your debt/credit too!
Even though he didn't feel the need to check often because he always had $$ in the bank, I told him how important it is to "see" his purchases, rather than "guess" how much he has left after making one.
@Kapua1230 - Never really looked at it as identity theft but some one definitly made unauthorized charges to my credit card internally from Mountain America Credit Union. Two charges of sixty dollars cash withdrawals in two weeks from Mountain America. Contacted bank security told them never in my life time have i used a credit card to withdraw cash they sent me a affidavit, sent it back. Those affidavits are cheesy/very un-detailed so i added a three page letter to it and had my bank manager notarize it. Less than a week later they credited everything back on my account.
According to my banks manager when full reinbursment including all charges associated happens it means they are on to something cause they don't just reimburse fee's and everything else unless they are on to something according to him. My guy at my bank also said its those small amounts that people are getting nailed with so tiny amounts a bank use to just write off are actually getting fully investigated now. I asked my guy if i get to learn who the thief is he said nope thats information handled internally but they have everything they need from me in my affidavit and letter. It is nice to know charges you know you would never make in a life time on your card are actually being fully investigated.
Or if you do then shred thoroughly first. ID thieves love going through the garbage looking for information and also take the mail promptly out of the mailbox.
Freecreditreport.com wont give you a free credit report unless you click the link that sends you to annualcreditreport.com. I have been pulling my report from annualcreditreport.com every 4 months for the last 3 years. I dont get my score but it is instant and really free. The trick is to pull it from a different agency every 4 months so you pull it once a year from each.
I heard the radio talk and know that what I have always heard Becky Brady recommend is that people go to the government setup website of www.annualcreditreport.com for credit reports. That is the only website that is official setup to get your accurate credit reports.
"Brady says people should go to credit Web sites like freecreditreport.com about every 30 days. But victims like Lee Yates say thieves could do severe damage within 30 days." Is a misrepresentation of what she said. The correct website is the www.annualcreditreport.com!
My husband's information was also compromised by the Countrywide employee. We decided to place a credit freeze on his information with the 3 credit bureaus. For $10.00 each, no credit history can be pulled without a pin number that is issued after sending in a letter of intent. No financial institution is going to lend money to someone if they can't access their credit history.
The correct website that you go to to get your credit report is: www.annualcreditreport.com. The other mentioned website is not the one that I gave. Becky Brady, Director of Commercial Business Operations, Genesis Credit Service
