Yes, but... @HDSN - At least they are willing to try harder than the Aviary. If the Aviary raises $1.5M they get the "rest of the money". Doing nothing still gets them the vast majority of the bond.
Simple @Service for you - Just raise admission from $8 to $15. (San Diego Zoo is $36).
Over 2 years, that will bring in $11M, AND the continuing revenue will PAY OFF THE BOND that voters approved. Net cost to taxpayers (in general), ZERO. Net cost to zoo goers, $44M, which is the way it should be!
Oh i see @Dilbo - But I know they want the money to upgrade and everything but I don't think alot of people would pay that seeing how crappy the Zoo is in it's current state. I'm all for the Zoo getting the money though to upgrade
Even less - @Dilbo - If the zoo raised the ticket price from $8 to $9.50 the additional revenue would make the bond payment and taxpayer’s wouldn’t be forced to.
Why is your zoo not worth $1.50 - that's less than a cup of coffee - right?
If it’s really worth it, folks would pay an extra buck and a half.
I would pay @Utah 101 - But alot of people wouldn't, is what I am saying! Specially the people who were against the zoo getting the money. Like I said in my previous post, I'm all for it
I would not pay. @Service for you - But that's for personal reasons. I have no desire to go pay to see a new "Arctic Exhibit" that cost bijillions of dollars to build when our economy is struggling and our numbers of homeless and unemployed keep going up.
The Polar Bears would have been just fine in their old home, for a few more years. Gees.
No @Antenna Girl - Have you been to the Zoo lately? It needs to be updated and cleaned up most definately! Well no other bills or props's have been brought up about the homeless or the umemployed, maybe you should start one if you so concerned!
Didn't mean that rude @Service for you - I'm just saying that the Zoo really did need the money! At least in the condition its currently in should show it!
It would be nice if this story had a link to donate money to the zoo. @Service for you - I live in Davis County and would gladly donate a few dollars for the zoo to get the matching funds. \
I guess I need to find trhe link and post it. Here is the link to donate to the zoo:
Lame I live in SLC county and I think every one that voted yes to pass this is a FOOL. How stupid can every one be to vote yes to raise once again? it sickens me to no end.... why dont we just raise the price to get into the stupid zoo? then those that use it will pay for it.
Second why the H.E.L.L does only SLC county have to pay more so that every one in the entire state can have an nicer zoo? if you are going to raise tax's raise them for every body......
Taxes @garboochie - Salt Lake County has to pay for it, because when I drive in from Davis County. I stop for lunch and gas in Salt Lake County thus is also generates revenue for Salt Lake County... Take it easy garboochie...
P.S if the prices of the Zoo go up, I won't be going anymore.
shhhhhhhh @muysauve - I dont freaking care what you have to pay for when you come to sl county!!!! move the zoo up to Davis County then and you pay more taxs.....
It IS a shame @Daniel W. - I understand the educational benefit of zoos...but honestly, do you think those animals are happy? It's not natural to have elephants, rhinos, or any other wild animal caged up to live and die encaged. They are roamers...they need miles of area to roam and have their own territory.
just wait... in a few months...the Zoo will come back to the County...not only will they say they can't live up to the bargain they agreed to...and the country council will let the bond through anyway...but the Zoo will ask for more money! Check the archives...they ahve already admitted they will be asking for another $40 million...
Oh...and the best part...all the management staff will be getting huge raises!
My opinion...I was against the bond...but it passed. Now the County...are you listening mayor Corroon? The County needs to make it very clear that they need to run a clean operation....and figure out how to make ends meet with current funding. If they push back...and stick with the "master plan" then management needs to go.
Between ZAP...and the bond...they really should be able to run a very nice operation without asking for more money from the taxpayer!
What I want to know is... @Nobadges - If they don't raise the 11 Million by the deadline, do the taxpayers get their bond money back, or will the city turn around and spend that money on things the taxpayers DIDN'T vote to approve?
I think its good we voted yes I believe in the zoo they are already past half way from what I understood reading that artical. I think it's a great way for us to spend our money those animal deserve to have the best and live the best way possible in a cage. Happy animals make more tourist tourist bring money into utah. The zoo can be good enough to bring tourest around once they are finished doing what they want in a couple year. I dont mind spending any of my money on it....Its a great thing for us to do.
"I dont mind spending any of my money on it" @Kari C. - Good news - your portion of the bill is $150 - if every person who voted for the zoo really believes the zoo needs this money and therefore gave $150 the 11 million dollars issue would be resolved.
Do you really believe this is right? Then get out your checkbook.
I am glad the zoo is getting the money. It is only about $5.00 per taxpayer. A small price to pay for such a great educational facility. What I am sick of is wasting my tax dollars paying SSI benifits to drug addicts and alcoholics who chose to be losers then expect the tax payers to support them for life.
$5.00 per taxpayer or $1.50 per ticket @Marc M. - It would only cost $1.50 per ticket to generate the same revenue this bonds creates – “A small price to pay for such a great educational facility”
:) I'm really glad this vote passed. I would much rather them take my money for these animals rather than spending it on wmds or this stupid war or anything else I don't agree with. I love going to the zoo, and can't wait to take my kids there when I have them. Last time I was there, I did notice it needed some improvements, so hopefully now they will be able to afford them :)
last time that i was at the zoo i brought a friend visiting from CA and was sooo embarassed. the albino alligator looked dead. food was horrible and too expensive. something def needs to be done.
then again, it's quite an improvement from the zoo in Las Vegas... yes, they have one.
If the management of the zoo feel they should get a raise in pay out of this, this bond should be reversed. Its bad enough when we have professional welfare families, now we are creating professional welfare businesses.
my point exactly... @yes and no - the current Zoo operation seems much more intent on obtaining funds..than running a Zoo. It is a safe prediction that they will claim to be underpaid as soon as the funds hit.
Funny...how many people here...admit the current zoo seems poorly run...questions what was done with the ZAP tax funding....and yet...voted to give the same give them more money...
And the best part...the ZOO already admits they are going to ask for $40+ million MORE!!
We have less than 1 million taxpayers in the entire State...The County has even fewer property tax payers...we simply can't afford to keep funding everything!
Time to say NO!
Sorry, we are not accepting new comments on this story.
KSL's public inspection files, including the Children's Television Programming Reports and the DTV Quarterly Activity Station Report, are available for viewing during regular office hours at the KSL Broadcast House.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
P.S if the prices of the Zoo go up, I won't be going anymore.
Zoos are depressing to me.

How about a desert exhibit where the creatures can actually live in the open?
If you really thought this was a good idea you would have requested they raise ticket prices by $1.50 rather than increase taxes on everyone.
By the way they still need another $11M (for phase I)- prove you are glad they are taking your money and get out your checkbook.
then again, it's quite an improvement from the zoo in Las Vegas... yes, they have one.
