The age of kids in gangs is declining, and now a new resource can help parents see the warning signs. A new handbook shows parents some of the basics of how to recognize gang influence on a child and what to do about it.
For example, before graffiti ends up on a wall, it could show up in random drawings in a school notebook. Parents should also know gangs recruit and network on computers. They call it "cyberbanging."
"The further entrenched they become in it, the more it takes to get them out. The earlier those signs can be recognized, the sooner resources can get to them," said Pete Walters, with the Utah Gang Investigator Association.
Utah's Gang Investigator Association and Farmers Insurance have partnered to publish the parent handbook, as both groups have an interest in reducing theft and vandalism.
