If people want to make an insurance claim on this, would it be the person who improperly stowed the chain? Or would the State be responsible for failing to properly secure the grate? You could make a strong case either way. It's just a question, nothing more, nothing less. Food for thought.
@Deven M. - Placing traffic over what was once the shoulders of the roadway and the drainage grates invites this sort of disaster. Chances are the culprit was a semi-truck, with a hanging trailer safety chain figuring it could get through the I-80 construction zone prior to traffic rather than taking the I-215 detour. Chances are the driver probably didn't realize he/she had a chain latch onto this and yank it off. It is something that a motorist can't see after it happens until you're right on top of it (even at sub-55mph!), which is what's scary!
Hopefully this will light a fire underneath the butt-heads at Wadsworth Construction to move as quickly as possible for the remaining traffic switch to the new westbound lanes and get those old beat up eastbound lanes in and around 700 East demolished before another incident such as this occurs.
@TheLastLaugh - Put the fire under UDOT. Don't blame Wadsworth, they are the sub-contractors under UDOT. I know several of the workers and superintendants on these bridges, and find your comment offensive! I believe you are one of those people who wouldn't drive over the 4500 south bridge because it might fall after it was constructed, but probably caused more than half of the damage to it before construction!
@TheLastLaugh - apparently, you have no experience with tractor trailer rigs. We do not have safety chains on our vehicles to keep the trailer from staying behind us if it comes off. We have other securing systems and devices, but I have had more trouble getting the fifth plate loose when I am stopped and pulling futilely on the release bar than I have had worries about the trailer coming off in traffic. The only chains on a tractor trailer rig are tire chains, and they are usually stored in a box on the side until they are needed. The weather has been way to nice to even unlock the box on my rig.
As to the vicious perpetrator of this heinous crime stopping, it is likely they did not even know it, as rough as SLC streets and highways are. Big trucks are such handy things to blame, to bad you did not fact check it. If a construction truck or tractor trailer rig has a chain hanging off of it, that is not to secure the trailer to the tractor.
@outdoorutah - are always there because they are on a mechanism that spins them under the wheels. They are not istalled on the wheels like on cars. Likely they are not responsible for this kind of accident.
@Deven M. - Either UDOT, or Wadsworth is responsible. This same thing happened during the I-15 reconstruction project.
Any semi can drive over a loose grate and cause it to pop out. The grate's on I-15 had not been welded into place, and I doubt this one was either.
When the project is done, these grate's will not be in the travel lanes. It's only during this construction stage that they end up in the travel lanes.
@Skyler A. - But, if they could finally finish that whole I-80 project, then they wouldn't have to worry about drivers being so close to the side of the roads where the grates are.
@It's just me... - They replaced 14 bridges, it's been only about 6 months construction. Are you serious. That's quick considering that each bridge could have taken up to a year and a half if they hadn't used the rapid bridge replacement. Some people complain if they are hung with a new chain!!!
@Mrs. Bliss - What, they don't have a magic wand?
Yeah, it is inconvenient. Construction stinks, but do you remember the chunks of cement and holes on the I-80 bridges before construction? UDOT can not just hurridly lay down a few miles of pavement and call it good. Most of the problems on this road during construction have been caused by drivers doing stupid things like big trucks not going around on I-215 and people dragging chains.
I am curious how the driver who pulled this up got away without damage. This grate was reportedly welded into the road; it isn't the kind of thing that simply pulls out of the road.
@Mrs. Bliss - They have actually completed 10 Bridges on the I-80 Project. 300 East, 500 East, 600 East, 700 east, 900 East, Highland Drive, 2 at Mountain Dell and 2 at Lambs Canyon. These were all done with the ABC method which cut time and cost down by huge amounts. The eastbound bridges of 300-Highland will not be done with the ABC method because space doesn't allow it. The bridges at Mtn Dell & Lambs Canyon were moved into place and traffic flowing within 24 hours or less. The roads and bridges needed to be replaced and fixed With the amount of traffic flow and growth the Wasatch Front is seeing. A little bit of inconvenience in under 2 years will be well worth the final product which could have taken 5 times that.
The grate was welded in place. It would have taken a semi-truck to pull it out, which are not recommended to drive on it anyway. I suspect UDOT will be paying for damages.
You know there was a time in this country Veterans and Veterans day was the headlines. I'm not surprised KSL hasn't made it their headlines.
To all those who have served, fallen and are currently serving in the Armed forces. THANK YOU... Thank you for making it possible for me to take my turn and serve this country and thank you for the sacrifices made to make it possible for every one to sit at home and post their opinions. Thank you for keeping and protecting the freedoms we have that alot of people take for granted. Thanks.
Freedom has a flavor that the protected will never know......
Since the I-15 pre-Olympic project, I've seen nothing but incompetence on the roads being re-done. The largest and best known national urban road construction co. was shut out of the bidding process. Ever since "cincrete" or whatever it was called, I don't trust UDOT with anything. We're lucky we get roads that work. I suppose we should be happy with that in Utah. You never see this monkey construction BS in other cities where accountability means something. People would lose their jobs.
Let's just hope nobody dies due to their incompetence this time.
To even insinuate that UDOT is incompetent really shows your ignorance on your part. UDOT has one of the toughest jobs in this state. Did you not see or hear all that was done over the summer? I've been amazed at what they've done. Growth means more drivers and cars on our roads and Salt Lake City/Utah as a whole has had plenty of growth and UDOT is having to do a lot to keep up with it.
You can't blame UDOT for everything. An accident is an accident.
@natx - the people behind the sound wall. Tell that to the tax paysers (us) that paid for it. Just try and tell UDOT they make any mistakes. Big heads, small minds.
@natx - do a MUCH better job at where signage for interchanges are placed. Most road signs are placed right before an interchange (especially at the spaghetti bowl). I like to drive around the country and I must say if I didn't live in Utah and already know the tricks, it would be hard to navigate.
I have a friend who lives in Portland that visited and his biggest complaint was that the signs were worthless.
The story says 'a chain on a car somehow ripped out the water grate'. This is bullcrap.
The trucks and busses, including school busses, that run on this road all have their snow chains hanging down from the holders. One of these could easily snag the grate and pull it out and the driver would never know.
How many accidents do we have to see involving these large truck and busses during the construction before they put a stop to the semi's actually kill someone?
this morning. I was in the middle lane and couldn't believe when I saw the grate sitting upside down in the road. Then, the line of cars all pulled over changing tires was crazy!
UDOT will do or say anything to pass the buck onto someone else, they pass the buck every year and that's why we have the worst roads in the Country. I've been around and I've never seen so many horrible roads in my life. This place has been growing for how many years? They should have thought about the growth and planned for it a long time ago. They always wait till the very last minute to get things done, look at 106th South from Redwood to Bangerter... that road could have used an overhaul 7 years ago, but now they just start doing something about it a few weeks ago and now we'll sit through the mess they made of it and nothing will get finished until next year heaven knows when.
UDOT is useless, they don't get any credit because they are always 10 years behind everyone else in the country. When I start seeing that they are doing a better job and not having to redo every road in the city more than once, then I'll be the first to rais a hand to commend them.
hey, stuff happens on the road. the allstate dude had it right on...talk to your insurance company. make sure you have all the requisite paperwork too. don't we all wish we were in good hands!!

I'm surprised there weren't more cars damaged by hitting the hole after the grate was displaced.
