(KSL News) The former head of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City issued a statement this evening defending The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' support of California's Proposition 8.

Bishop William Weigand, who is now head of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sacramento, issued the statement in response to recent attacks on the LDS Church.

In part, the statement reads: "Catholics stand in solidarity with our Mormon brothers and sisters in support of traditional marriage - the union of one man and one woman - that has been the major building block of Western Civilization for millennia.

Bishop Weigand goes on to say that as a former bishop of the Diocese of Salt Lake City, he can vouch for the fact that Latter-day Saints are "good and generous people with a long history of commitment to family and giving to community causes."
