The Hogle Zoo has gotten voter approval for a big public loan, but there's a catch.
Voters approved a $33 million bond for Hogle Zoo to build an African savanna exhibit and an arctic showcase.
"We've got a whole lot of people here at our campaign headquarters who've worked very, very hard over the past several weeks to make this a possibility," said Hogle Zoo Executive Director Craig Dinsmore.
He says now comes perhaps the hard part: To get that $33 million in bonds the zoo first must raise $11 million in a challenging economic environment.
Voters also approved a measure to give the Tracy Aviary $19.6 million for an indoor rainforest exhibit, a bird show and an education facility. About $6 million of the funding is contingent upon raising $1.5 million in private funding.
