SALT LAKE CITY — As negotiations for a resolution are ongoing, a trial date was set Monday for Tony Yapias, a prominent Latino activist facing allegations of rape.
Yapias appeared in court for what was scheduled as a possible disposition hearing, but his attorney, Sean Young, said a resolution has not yet been reached in the case. As discussions continue, a three-day trial was scheduled for Aug. 2-4.
Yapias, whose full name is Adolfo Tony Yapias-Delgado, is charged with rape, a first-degree felony, and tampering with evidence, a class A misdemeanor.
Yapias, 50, is accused of going to the home of a former longtime girlfriend who had recently broken off their relationship in March 2016, despite receiving texts from her telling him not to come, according to charging documents.
At some point after arriving at the woman's residence, there was sexual intercourse, which Yapias claims was consensual. The woman reported the alleged rape to police and others that same day, "despite her fears and concerns with respect to immigration issues," court documents say.

Davis County Attorney Troy Rawlings declined comment after Tuesday's hearing. Rawlings is prosecuting the case because of Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill's close ties to Yapias.
