Coming back from Cedar City one time. @wouldn't be prudent - I was hit by three chunks of gravel, ended up with a cracked windshield and broken headlight over that one.
@Bush Fan - I get so angry when I have to pass a truck that is losing gravel all over the road. I too, have had my windshield broken a couple of times. I also had a metal pipe come flying at me on the freeway, and it took out my whole rear view mirror. I was lucky it did not go through my windshield.
@Mariannerocks - The person who trolled me must be one of those dumptruck drivers who let their load spill out and ruin everyone's cars. Thanks idiots!
you must have no clue!!!!! @Mariannerocks - All you nice people who bash a truck driver, You should try doing their job.
If you think about it, you should thank a truck driver. You need food it is transported by truck drivers. You want clothing hauled by truck drivers.
You want roads to drive your cars on or you want topsoil or gravel products for your home, all transported by truck drivers. Don't even get me started. You are so quick to judge. If it WAS NOT FOR TRUCK DRIVERS AND TRUCKS YOU WOULD NOT HAVE YOUR COMPUTER< because a truck driver delivered it to the store you bought it from. WITHOUT TRUCK DRIVERS AMERICA STOPS.
As for tarping the load it is NOT A LAW TO tarp
unless it is above the side boards. if it is 12 inches below the top of the end gate it is NOT REQUIRED BY LAW TO BE TARPED!!! FYI
As for him being lazy, once again you are very fast to get your opinion read on ksl or to judge somone.
mariannerocks I'm not sure @Mariannerocks - but I beleive your rear view mirror is on the same side of your windsheild as you are. So you are very lucky when the gravel broke your mirror. Or maybe your talking about your side mirror that got broken??"" lol
STAY BACK YOU SAY @#1trucker - Well we did stay back I was about three car lengths behind the truck and I still lost the oil pan, transmission line, brakes and who knows what else my car just stopped. Once the load dropped you couldn't see a thing for about 3 seconds. And a lot can happen in that short amount of time. And did you happen to notice that the trucker was in the middle lane????? And his load happened to dump out of the bottom of the truck.
They train truckers to stay in the middle lane as much as possible @BaMa - Since they do not have brakes that are as responsive as those on a car, they need to have as many escape routes as possible.
WOMEN @wouldn't be prudent - I thought they had banned women from having CDL's!!!! You let one women drive a big truck and look what she does to the morning commute.
@megster - But there are exits prior to that area and information boards and news reports on the radio that can alert people to get off. At least now there is a place to go.
Good Thing about Legacy, @Yocum - That its 14 miles of not having to worry about getting hammered by rocks,or gravel. And its 14 miles of not having some inbred trucker riding my tail, even though Im already speeding. Its 14 miles of not having to look at a disgusting pee bottle. Now if we can just make a rule where Idaho drivers arent allowed,it might run a lot smoother!
Better check your math @Fegelein! Fegelein! Fegelein! - I read in a recent online article that insurance rates in Idaho are lower and have the fewest insurance clames in the nation.
I also see how well reguarded drivers in Utah are, I have to drive with them daily.
I personally started driving in Idaho at age 14 and consider myself a better driver than "most" Utah drivers. Granted I have been in utah for 20 years.
Your "hard data" @wouldn't be prudent - Is nothing but information on how much insurance costs. Yes, Idaho is lower in cost than Utah and many other states, but that says nothing on the ability or safety of drivers.
Bottom line: Insurance companies don't have to spend as much to fix those cars and tractors. For 2 reasons:
1. Tractors don't go fast enough to cause a lot of damage, and
2. The tractor drivers don't drive any faster in their cars. They drive like they're still in their tractors. And therefore, the cars don't go any faster than the tractors, so they don't cause a lot of damage.
Then Splain this! @wouldn't be prudent - How come you Ida-tards insist on CAMPING out in the far left lane, going BELOW the speed limit!? What part of "Slower Traffic Keep Right" do you not understand??
I don't disagree that @Fegelein! Fegelein! Fegelein! - with certain people going slow in the fast lane, check out utah county sometime. The vast majority are utards look that up in the "Urban dictonary".
Just think about this .... heaven forbid you need to move over lanes and actually use your turn signal, as the person 4 car lengths behind you in that lane will speed up and try to close the gap so you can't move over.
At least I know when capitalizations hould be used.
Then let it snow, we don't even want to go there. At least Idaho drivers know how to drive in the snow and inclimate weather conditions. Given your posts about liking to speed and such, I envision you as a the dude in the big 4x4 screaming by on slick roads, that I pass later down the road and just honk wave and laugh to myself.
The freeway is not a speedway for your convienence as you so like to think.
Classic @wouldn't be prudent - Utards calling people Idatards and Idatards calling people Utards. Wonder if there are any Wyotards, Colotards, Aritards and Nevatards. I know FOR SURE that there are plenty of Caltards in Utah mingling with those good driving Utards.
Oh yea @Angrywhiteman - Life here would be so great without dirt trucks, just think about it, you wouldnt have to worry about these kind of things because there wouldn't be a freeway to drive on, no roads at all and probably not even a house to worry about... Sounds great to me..
I'll tell you which dirt haulers @Jeffrey C. - SUCK! It's those who insist on driving in the #3 lane on I-15 (the third from the right) regardless of speed. They may be doing 60, but most I have to deal with are doing around 70. Many times I see them riding someones rear end at 65 mph.
Unfortunatly, I see more of them in the #3 lane than in either of the two right lanes.
That is wrong IMO!!! They create a hazard in that lane. They sling rocks and dirt all over the place and force everyone else to move around them. I don't care what taxes they pay, or what rights you say they have. Common sense and courtesy should dictate they drive in the right two lanes.
A large percentage of the time I see it the two right lanes are as open as the two left lanes are. These drivers should be over in the RIGHT TWO LANES! AND they should NOT be exceeding the speed limit, even though they might get one or even two more loads in that day.
These jerkhoffs are risking the safety of all on the road, including themselves.
don't worry @whatha - they got mad someone peed in their coffee this morning instead of putting sugar and creamer in it.
but I agree, most trucks of that size are ordered to move to the right. Some cops will even force them to move over, saw it happen to a Wal-Mart semi driving in the lane next to the carpool.
That's good... @shea-shea - ...that the cop ordered the truck over.
Trucks are not allowed in the carpool lane OR the lane next to it. Neither are they allowed in the far left lane of any highway with 3 or more lanes traveling in the same direction, Bangerter included.
But other than that, trucks are allowed in ANY other lane. If you don't like it, then move to another lane.
Blah Blah Blah @whatha - WAAAAA, WAAAAA, I am not the only one on the road.
Get real man, there are more accidents with smaller vehicles than the big ones. How often do you reserve the right lane for the big guys. Yet you expect that the big guys need to reserve the left lane for your butt. Imagine little terds zooming around and hanging out in your office, and telling you how to do your work, ALL DAY!! And when you screw up they should paste it on the news so that those same terds can complaine whine about it.
It is too bad that this accident happened, and that people got hurt. But don't blame an intire industry for your bad day.
The best way @Cabbie - to get back at a truck that has brocken your windshield is to get infront of them and throw a hand full of pennies out your windo. its an eye for an eye kind of thing. Pluss it makes you feel good. You should try it
You're entitled to your opinion... @whatha - ...however wrong it may be.
Do you truck haters ever stop to consider why a truck does what it does BEFORE you criticize them for doing it?
Let's take your example of trucks running in the #3 lane, as you call it. Why do they create a hazard? First, if they were in the far right lane, they'd have to constantly speed up, slow down, speed up, etc. for merging traffic. The second lane is just as hazardous for the big trucks because the "right lane" usually disappears and reappears depending on where you are on the interstate.
The HOV lane is obviously off limits for trucks AND ANYONE HAULING TRAILERS, and so is the "fast lane" or the lane next to the HOV lane. Trucks CANNOT use either of those lanes.
Think about it:
1. The far right lane is not a continuous lane. It starts and stops all along the Wasatch front, becomes exit only, then starts again, and
2. The 2nd lane is the farthest right "continuous" lane, which at times has cars merging into and out of to enter and exit the highway, and
3. It's dangerous to fellow road users to slow down and speed up to merge with those cars, or to change lanes to avoid those cars.
With that in mind, can you think of which lane might be safest for the trucks to travel in? Can you tell me which lane might be legal for the truck to travel in?
Let me help you...the #3 lane.
I have to agree with a lot of the posters here that dirt haulers CAN BE a menace on the roads. Check with Highway Patrol. Most of the trucks that they have problems with, most of the trucks that have safety issues with are the dump trucks or the "dirt haulers".
Are they all like that? No. I personally know a dump truck driver who owns his own truck. He has NEVER received a ticket or an out-of-service citation on his equipment. Why? BECAUSE HE TAKES PRIDE IN WHAT HE DOES AND IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THOSE AROUND HIM.
May we all see a lesson in that.
As for your comment, you're wrong, you're inconsiderate, you're uninformed, and your naivete regarding the safe driving of trucks is more than obvious.
Learn to drive around trucks. If you see a truck doing something you wonder about, rather than quickly jumping to stupid conclusions, think about what he's doing and why. It may open your eyes a little bit.
RWN @RWN - If only you were educated enough to read my post and hear what I said. Instead of being a defensive, ignorant sounding "terd" as you call it you might just sound at least a little (tiny) intellegent.
Your truck owner friend is a saint on the road I'm sure.
As for your response: You're wrong, inconsiderate and uninformed. Your defensiveness and inability to understand what someone says speaks volumes of your overall intellegence.
Rather than jumping to irrational, STUPID responses to what others say, perhaps you should learn to read before you flap your jaw.
Jeffrey, @Jeffrey C. - I like to call them Earth movin belly dumpin road PIGS! I hate the gravel trucks. Not so much that they are slow. It's because they are everywhere and they drive those big pigs around like they are in their trashy jacked up deisel pick-up trucks. Especially those trucks from that lousy company called "Barney Trucking." Those bozos cruise along 201 in the left lane at 75 in a 65 zone. They ride up and tailgate people if they are in the left lane trying to pass. Idiots. I hate earth movin belly dumpin road PIGS!
Crankypuss @Cankerpuss - Take night school for inteligence (not on line but real school) and seek counseling for anger mangement. did you just get fired from "Barney Trucking"?
why do they take the freeway anyway? I define the freeway/highway as a fast moving road.... So why do all the slow cars/trucks and especially the haulers use the freeway??
Hey Mavin!! @mavin_drummer - Commercial trucks actually should have a little more right than the general public on the freeway, see its a little thing called road tax.. and fuel tax.. All trucking companies pay it. Every single mile a truck rolls down the road they have to pay the govenment a percent and in every single state.
Agreed! @mavin_drummer - Study after study has proven that when ALL traffic is going the same speed, less chances of accidents will occur. So,the way I see it,,if you cant do at least 75,you have zero right to use the freeway!
Fegelein @Fegelein! Fegelein! Fegelein! - This ain't the Autobahn, little sweeper. The speed limit (as in: the fastest you can legally go) is 65. If you're going 75, you should have your license and road privileges removed all together. Could it be that a zippy little guy like you cut the truck off, causing this whole mess? Wouldn't be the first time.
You know Fegelein @Fegelein! Fegelein! Fegelein! - Your comment is interesting. Last I heard, there was a push going on to lower the speed limit for trucks; one speed for cars, the other for trucks.
I wish you guys would get your stories straight before you start bashing the trucks.
One day you're saying slow down, the next you're saying speed up. One day you're saying no trucks, the next you're crying because your grocery bill is going up.
You truck haters need to get together and come up with a clear plan. You're confusing us "inbred" "uneducated" "inconsiderate" "unbathed" "toothless" truck drivers. (Did I miss any descriptors?)
you would @mavin_drummer - rather them take the side roads, and residential to get to where they are going. How about a convoy through your school zones while your kids are walking home. The interstates are mainly for the big rigs, they are the ones that pay for it. They do not always have an alternate rout. But I am sure YOU do. I think that every vehicle big or small should be able to use the facilities that they help pay for without scruitny. Ya they need to follow the rules of the roads, and there are a lot of idiot truck drivers out there. But you shouldn't blame the whole trucking industry because one of them wrecked this morning.
Most People are unaware... @mavin_drummer - that approximately 80% of all freight is delivered by diesel trucks.
Take the trucks off the roads and you have nothing! No groceries, gas, clothing, building supplies, etc. You name it, it is more than likely it is delivered by big rigs. Get off their case! They provide an essential service for all of us. And I guarantee you complainers aren't perfect drivers yourselves!!! I seen the way you drive!!!
I hate to bear the bad news @Fegelein! Fegelein! Fegelein! - But we need those hauled around too. Without them, you wouldn't even have a road to drive on.
On the flip side, I have a CDL and have hauled dirt and rocks, and there is nothing that irritates me more then when a truck driver is being reckless.
If the price of Diesel Feul is so expensive @Weezydoghog - Why does it seem lately that there are twice as many big rigs on the road than there were a year ago?
I commute to and from work via the 201 highway/freeway. I drive from 8400 west over to 3200 west. 8400 West has become 'The Dirt Hauler Express'. (Only there is NOTHING express about it when you find yourself stuck behind one of those obnoxious beasts and cannot get around them!)
8400 west, along with the 201 highway is usually a constant barrage of dirt haulers from sun up until sun down. I think the reason they sometimes drive in such a [no swearing please]ly fashion on the freeway is to make up for all the time they sit in traffic. It takes those stupid trucks what seems like forever to get up to speed if they have stopped at a red light. This is probably why so many of them love to barrell right thru a stop light, because they know how p__ed the drivers are going to be who are behind them if they have to wait to get back up to speed. There are a couple of lights on the 201; One at 8400 west, and another a few blocks east. These are major bottlenecks as they are, but throw a dirt hauler (Usually 4 or 5 of them) in the mix, and it turns the 201 into a parking lot. I wish they could find another route. (or put more lanes on the 201!)
Yes, construction requires dirt haulters sometimes, but sheesh, how many do we need on the highway all at once? Why do they insist on clogging up the roads during the morning or afternoon rush hour?
TOO many trucks on the road? @Tom M. - There are so many trucks on the road because the need is up for all the construction projects. You would be surprised what it takes to get a job done. Especially a large one like an office building or Legacy Highway.
Diesel fuel costs won't stop the truckers. They just take other measures to counter act the costs.
Apparently you don't know too much about the westside... @Tom M. - 8400 W has always been a major route for Kennecott trucks adding the huge housing construction boom out here and you have all those trucks you talk about.
There is no access to I-80 until 5600 W what other road should they take 3500 S HA HA HA.
And don't know too much about big trucks "It takes those stupid trucks what seems like forever to get up to speed if they have stopped at a red light"
Duh thousands of tons doesn't move that fast plus all the gears they have to shift through. Be a little more patient.
The reason why 201 is always backs up has little to do with trucks but more that the population in Tooele and the west side of SLC has more than doubled in 10 years and all they did to that road is add lights, it needs to be widened.
The government @Fegelein! Fegelein! Fegelein! - gets a large part of their funding from the taxes they collect off trucking companies to build and maintain the freeway, if they were not on it using it well.... two things it took dirt trucks to build the freeway for you, then the road miles they are taxed while building it also helped funding to build it, sounds to me like they get to use it to continue building things for us to make life easier.
Not quite there funny person @Fegelein! Fegelein! Fegelein! - Apparently you have never heard of VOIP and VPN, besides welfare and unemployement pay too low and Billy likes money to spend.
VoIP and VPN @Billy_Jack - you mean? The "O" is not capitalized.... LOL yes I have heard of it and think it's the best thing since sliced bread. Given Fegelein!'s posts its pretty obvious that he has an ID10T err running in his brain In a subroutine loop!
wait.... @Billy_Jack - maybe he actually does work from home, I can a couple of days a week as the load allows. Or mentally handicapped that should not be driving I would rather have them think watching a show and participating in the nelson rating system is a job, than on the roads with the rest of us.
SLC Current Conditions This has nothing to do with this website but it says it's 0 degrees fahrenheit and partly cloudy. And there isn't even snow outside. The rocks and dirt can't be that bad when it's apparently that cold outside.
Personal Experience With This Accident I was going northbound in the middle lane when the semi decided to lose his load. An object approximately two feet in diameter fell off, going into the northbound lanes, and then went under my car. Now my car is in the shop with the power steering gone - potentially the whole rack and pinion steering unit gone.
The blessing out of the experience of the object coming at me - at least it didn't bounce into my windshield.
@Roger M. - My dad had a experience like that once on 201, was driving behind a truck full of wood and other debris and uncovered. A piece of wood flew out and went right for his windshield. He swerved to avoid it and it smacked his radio antenna and cause some minor body damage. But if he wouldn't have tried avoiding it, it would have gone through the windshield and probly killed him.
Trucks on the freeway! The truck that ruined traffic this morning is unfortunate. If it weren't for trucks like that non of us would have roads or homes or the goods to supply our homes with. We all need to be considerate of each other.
It is illegal for those trucks to be in the fast lane but they are human like the rest of us law breakers. So next time you see them doing this think about the bonehead moves you have made in the past.
Truckers I work in the construction industry so i know first hand that some truck drivers aren't the sharpest tools in the shed. On the other hand most of them are true professionals that are good at what they do. They learn how to do the job correctly and watch out for each other. If anyone wants to bag on them and what they do go take a walk in their shoes. I doubt most people would be able to hack it. It is not a job for everyone. How would you like being in a truck that weighs anywhere from 28000 pounds to 129000 pounds with or without a load on. Then have some JACK A** cut you off or cussing at you because you can't accelerate like his car. Really people everybody has a job to do that makes the world go round. Please remember that and be considerate!!!
Saw the spill myself If I would've left home 15 seconds earlier, then the truck would've dumped its load all over me instead of on the cars in front of me. So, I suppose I should thank my kids for insisting on giving me hugs & kisses (and more hugs and kisses) before I left for work :)
I was driving around the bend there before the Beck Street overpass when I saw a cloud of dust and everyone started slamming on their brakes. Looking down the lane all I could see was dirt and rocks; at first I thought maybe UDOT had torn up the road or something like that.
There were a few cars in the left lane that looked like they had hit each other. A black (infiniti?) looked like it had taken the brunt of it as it hit the wall and I think the car behind it T-Boned it.
As I passed the mess I noticed the semi truck on the right. It was a 2-trailer belly dumper and both belly doors were open. Oops..?
There was a good 2-3 inches of dirt on the road and some of the rocks were fairly large, maybe 4-5 inches in diameter.
go ahead and troll me @Tony d. - But I gotta say this:
TONY, I really wish you had been right behind that truck. It would than at least give you a reason to say what you do.
You're an inconsiderate fool. You take pride in simply bashing the truckers and the trucking industry. How about you actually learn about them and their industry. You'll quickly learn respect for what they do.
Come to my work one day. I'll be more than happy to give you a driving lesson, or at least take you for a ride down the interstate. I guarantee that you'll come out of the ride with a new appreciation for what the truckers have to deal with.
Have some of them come up with inappropriate coping mechanisms? Perhaps. But until you have actually been in a truck, or driven one with the uninformed, inconsiderate drivers on the road, then keep your mouth shut.
BELLY DUMPER??? The picture I saw on KSL was not a belly dump. If that really was the truck its called an end dump. Hence the gate on the end of it. So is the another case of the news reporting the wrong thing???
All above comments and any that come below FYI the facts are;
The driver was indeed in the slow lane, not 3rd from the right. Gravel spread to the 3rd lane.
NOT driver error, fluke electrical failure, on a 2008 truck. The entire rig truck and trailers were given a full inspection on site by DOT, facts are DOT gave phenomenal praise that the rig, driver, company, and surrounding drivers, that performed in such a professional manner, under tough circumstances.
Let see, no pictures of the actual clean up crew and equipment that were 1st to the scene, that happen to be co-workers to the driver, and nearly had the entire mess cleaned up before State crews arrived.
The red truck which is a truck and pup NOT and end-dump, is not the truck that lost its load, it is a fellow trucker nice enough to check that the trucker and victims were okay, and yes the red trucks load is not covered because he was empty. The actual truck that accidently lost his load, by law does not have tarps, it was a belly dump no tarp required FYI loads by this company are always covered on trucks that dump from the rear.
As to the handicap and drugs comments, this driver as well as all other employees for this company has and is required to pass drug and alcohol testing monthly. OH and company policy no cell phones while driving or operating. Not your typical "CONSTRUCTION" company.
Lets go on, as for the dirt trucks comments, where would we be... no roads, no stores, no houses, no sewer (oh dear where must I pooh?), no water, must I go on? Seriously without big trucks period, the world would not go round, no gas, no food, no clothes, oh and better yet no cars for us to buy at the fancy dealership.
The real comment which was posted above and should be what every post here is about is...... HOPE EVERYONE IS OKAY!!!! Indeed everyone is, minor injuries to one alert driver that was able to avoid further injury by paying attention and not talking on his cell phone. Could have been worse and had fatalities. The Lord gives tender mercies everyday. Count your mercies and those less fortunate, that have ACCIDENTS, beyond their control.
Thank God For meroz!!! It's still an end dump because that is were the material comes out of the truck and the pup!!! Though it is not a semi end dump which is different!!! I am glad everyone is OK though!!!
Dear RNW, @RWN - When I said it is still an end dump I was referring to the picture of the red truck. The "truck and pup" as meroz pointed out is an end dump because that is were the material comes out. The end of both the truck and the pup. I know my trucks you people can think what you want. As for keeping my mouth shut I will not because I am not a fool. Like I said think what you want. I love all of you and despite your comments I believe you all to be good human beings.
JUST A LITTLE FYI tarps ARE required by law. for dirt that can freely fly in the wind. NOT required for asphalt, rock. and other big stuff. at speeds over 50 mph. regardless of end dump, belly dump, or dump truck. 90 percent of trucks DON'T have tarps. i got a ticket once. but it was discharged due to the fact that i was crossing the freeway which required driving about 1/4 mile. but if we don't have our tarps up. we get pulled over and accused of being heavy. which is a 1500 dollar fine, plus another 300 for not having tarps up. so before you accuse truckers of being lazy. i suggest you check and see if he actually HAS a tarp to roll out. of the 10 percent that DO HAVE tarps. 99.99 percent of those are electric motors. why the law isn't enforced for the 90 percent that DON'T have tarps is beyond me. and for those that are overdramatic. we don't throw out rocks at windshields like your stories go. we do however drive in rocks and sometimes one gets stuck in the tire tread. but we don't throw out 100's of rocks like some of you like to beleive. and how come none of you pick on the pick up's that are hauling home trash away and don't have tarps. they have lose debris that are requied by law to be tarped also. in fact. D.O.T sits at the county landfill all the time pulling over pick ups.
Trucker's Wife I am so sick of reading all these horrible things. My husband is the truck driver who's trailer malfunctioned. For the comment that suggests that he is a woman... oh, can I prove you wrong... :P. For the ones calling him a moron, idiot, etc... what happened on the road was beyond his control. I would LOVE to see any of you try and handle the same situation. All of you people who have been bashing him, wait until you know all of the facts before you spew your word vomit on the internet.
All of us have things happen in our lives that we cannot control... does that mean that we are instantly the most moronic people in the world???
To all of you who understand that ACCIDENTS HAPPEN... thank you for being able to understand that everyone has bad days.
To the people in the damaged vehicles and their families... I am so glad that there weren't any serious injuries and I hope that those of you who were injured have a swift recovery.
i was the driver of the volvo,.... LACK OF SAFETY REQUIRMENTS AND THEIR ENFORCEMENT is why this happened. Let me get some things perfectly clear just to set the record straight. Thank goodness I survived this!!! NOW for all the people who are using conjecture instead of facts to derive their opinions, heres exactly what happened. This complete mess was the total fault of the incompetent trucking company's ineptitude.
I was driving the VOLVO (the black one that was wrecked during this escapade) I was in the center lane
just passing over the Beck street bridge, when the Belly dump truck in the right lane let go of everything, at a speed of 55-60 mph, i was slowly passing him on the left side at about 60-65. First one rock hit, that immediately cracked the windshield. Then a foggy river of churning 55mph rocks
5 feet deep showered my car at once. I was hit with a good sized rock that penetrated the windscreen on the passenger side. I then attempted to slow down by letting off the gas, and held on for dear life. Unfortunatley the rubble going under my car was too much for the wheels to grip properly, and i started in a sideways skid, which i corrected only to find myself drifting towards the concrete barrier at 50+mph
I hit head on and the airbags deployed. I am from Cali and can tell you from much driving experience that drivers and the companies that employ them, are equally responsible for this debacle, no passing the buck or throwing each other under the bus so to speak. Someone needs to shut these guys down once and for all. Lack of safety requirments is precisely why
this accident occured and should have been prevented
period. Thanks to all those who who stopped to help me
and were witnesses to this idiocy.
Patrick I am so glad you are ok!! I was one of the medical asst that held your neck until medical crews got there. I was also the one who called 911, your family members and your boss. I don't care what the people say on this blog say, they have no idea what happened. You do, I do, and a few others who witnessed it, know exactly what happened. This was no way your fault and it could have been so much worse. All because this trucking company didn't want to follow safety requirements!! I am very thankful for your well being. Good luck to you and your future.
The actual tarp law Thank you David S. for bringing up the tarp law I looked it up to help others understand.
The truck spilling the load did not require a tarp as you may read for yourself, because his load was nearly 8-12" below the top of his bed rails, further more a trap could not have prevented an electrial failure of the dump gates on the under side of the trailer.
I little tid bit from http://www.udot.utah.gov
What is the Tarp Law?
The Utah Highway Patrol, enforces the tarp law. This law basically states that a vehicle carrying dirt, sand, gravel, rock fragments, pebbles, crushed base, aggregate, any other similar materials or scrap metal shall have a covering over the entire load unless:
The highest point of the load does not extend above the top of any exterior wall or sideboard of the cargo compartment of the vehicle.
The outer edges of the load are at least six inches below the top inside edges of the exterior walls or sideboards of the cargo compartment of the vehicle.
Sorry, we are not accepting new comments on this story.
KSL's public inspection files, including the Children's Television Programming Reports and the DTV Quarterly Activity Station Report, are available for viewing during regular office hours at the KSL Broadcast House.
To Bush Fan: the truckers should cover "their" loads;
To empty-handed: the truckers don't cover their loads because "they're" lazy.
So in your face Rocky!
I also see how well reguarded drivers in Utah are, I have to drive with them daily.
I personally started driving in Idaho at age 14 and consider myself a better driver than "most" Utah drivers. Granted I have been in utah for 20 years.

The freeway is not a speedway for your convienence as you so like to think.
sorry typo
These are the drivers who SUCK.
Not enough brain cells to formulate I response I guess.
but I agree, most trucks of that size are ordered to move to the right. Some cops will even force them to move over, saw it happen to a Wal-Mart semi driving in the lane next to the carpool.
They're called MANAGERS!
You're still a dork.
Quit yer belly achin'!
On the flip side, I have a CDL and have hauled dirt and rocks, and there is nothing that irritates me more then when a truck driver is being reckless.
Diesel fuel costs won't stop the truckers. They just take other measures to counter act the costs.
(If you are Huh'ing check the weather page)
The blessing out of the experience of the object coming at me - at least it didn't bounce into my windshield.
If so, I'm envyous!
It is illegal for those trucks to be in the fast lane but they are human like the rest of us law breakers. So next time you see them doing this think about the bonehead moves you have made in the past.
The rest of the way was nice driving, though :)
Hope everyone's OK.
Judas Priest - give this moron a broom and make him clean it up!
Tony D.
Hey Mike I'm glad you hugged your kids today. :)
You say "It's still an end dump..." What is still an end dump? Your comment makes absolutely no sense.
Take some advice Marci: It's better to keep your mouth shut and have people think you a fool, then to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
You would think they would won’t to use it in the first place
All of us have things happen in our lives that we cannot control... does that mean that we are instantly the most moronic people in the world???
To all of you who understand that ACCIDENTS HAPPEN... thank you for being able to understand that everyone has bad days.
To the people in the damaged vehicles and their families... I am so glad that there weren't any serious injuries and I hope that those of you who were injured have a swift recovery.
