OGDEN — A physically abused infant also tested positive for methamphetamine and THC, the active ingredient of marijuana, according to charges filed Monday.
Antonio Jose Tamez, 25, of Roy, is charged in 2nd District Court with child abuse, a second-degree felony, and endangerment of a child, a third-degree felony.
The alleged abuse occurred sometime in August, according to investigators, when Tamez's 5-week-old son was taken to Primary Children's Hospital for seizures. Doctors there discovered the infant had "multiple broken bones" and serious head injuries, according to court documents.
Tamez also "admitted to slapping the (boy's) stomach … to see his reaction, causing a large bruise on the baby's stomach," the charges state. He allegedly admitted to multiple people that he had been "too rough" with his son.
A hair follicle test performed on the infant in October also yielded positive results for meth and THC, the charges allege.
"The baby was left in Jose's care only during the time of the abuse and the time when the baby would have ingested the drugs," according to the charging documents.
A summons for Tamez to appear in cour was issued. He was not in police custody Monday. His initial hearing is scheduled for Jan. 13.
Tamez's criminal history in Utah includes convictions for impaired driving, marijuana possession and drug paraphernalia possession, state court records show.
