MILLCREEK — Unified police discovered the body of a man in Millcreek on Wednesday afternoon and are investigating his death as suspicious, officials said.

A family member found the man's body inside his home at 3185 S. 900 East and called police around 3 p.m., said Unified police detective Ken Hansen.

Hansen said the man, in his early 40s, was likely dead for a few days when he was discovered. The man called in sick to work Monday, he said.

His death is being treated as suspicious in part because of "the history of this particular person" and the condition of the home, Hansen said.

"Kind of the way the house appeared to be. … Based on that, we’re kind of taking a really close look at it," he said, noting that the house wasn't "ransacked."

The detective said there were some "irregularities" in the cluttered home, where the man had lived for about eight or nine years.

It wasn't clear Wednesday whether anyone lived with the man. Hansen didn't say whether the man had a criminal history.

The "appearance of the body" also tipped off investigators to a suspicious death, Hansen said, but "there are not the obvious signs that you would find in most homicides in this case."

The man's relatively young age also raises red flags, Hansen added.

"That in itself it adds kind of the unknown. … When you have a younger person like this pass away, we just have to look all of the details," he said.

The Utah State Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy to determine a cause of death, Hansen said. Investigators will rely heavily on the autopsy report in this particular case, he said.

The man's name wasn't immediately released.
