SALT LAKE CITY — One person was shot in an officer-involved shooting near 210 South Rio Grande St. in Salt Lake on Saturday night, Salt Lake City Police Department confirmed.
"There was an altercation taking place, and our officers intervened into that altercation," said Salt Lake City Police detective Greg Wilking. Police confirmed two officers were involved in the incident.
One person was shot and taken to the hospital. As of late Saturday night, there was no update on the condition of the individual wounded. Wilking said he was not aware of how many shots were fired during the incident.
Unified Police will be conducting the investigation into the shooting.
There were many angry people out on the street after the altercation occurred. According to witnesses, glass and rocks were being thrown at police officers. Many officers were in riot gear. Multiple agencies were called to respond for assistance. Police said there were close to 100 officers involved in response to the incident.
"It was a very active scene for the officers involved down there," said Wilking. "They needed other officers to respond. Very upset...people are emotional right now."
Police said people have been detained related to the incident and several potential witnesses were being interviewed.
Wilking could not confirm if there is police officer body camera footage.
Police rerouted traffic in the area and have asked the public to avoid the area.
UTA rails were closed around the area near 200 South 500 West. UTA said the Blue Line TRAX will be running between the Arena Station and Draper. UTA asked the public to use North Temple Station for northbound and southbound FrontRunner access.
During the Utah Jazz vs. Brooklyn Nets game at Vivint Smart Home Arena, there was a public address announcement asking the crowd to not head southbound on 400 West and avoid the area. Fans attending the game were advised to use driving routes to the east and north as they left the area.
