MIDVALE — The family of a man mistakenly shot and injured by a Unified police officer Friday night has made his name and age public.
Dustin Evans, 30, was shot in the arm and the leg by officer Cory Tsouras who was chasing a man who had fired at him multiple times.
"The family would like to thank everyone for the outpour of thoughts and prayers. We appreciate your support on this long road to recovery, but we ask for our privacy at this time," the Evans family said in a statement Sunday.
Tsouras fired two rounds at a man he believed had just opened fire on him, striking Evans twice and leaving him with injuries that were at one point considered life threatening, only to find out later it was the wrong person, Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder said Saturday.
Police only identified Evans as a 25-year-old man after the shooting.
The man whom police were chasing, 32-year-old Jeremy Bowden, was arrested in a nearby neighborhood. Police recovered a firearm at the scene.
Bowden was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of attempted aggravated murder as well as for a number of drug and weapons-related charges.
