SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A judge says a former East High School football player charged with numerous sex crimes needs therapy more than punishment.

Third District Judge Dane Nolan on Wednesday ordered the 16-year-old into state custody and therapy in a residential treatment facility. He also directed the boy to write letters of apology to his victims.

In March the teen was found guilty of forcible sexual abuse, attempted forcible sodomy -- both first-degree felonies -- and misdemeanor lewdness. The charges stem from hazing incidents involving other team members in 2007.

The teenager also faces additional sex and assault charges for an incident with two children he was baby-sitting.
