PRICE — Deputies with the Carbon County Sheriff's office located and recovered the body of a missing boater in Scofield Reservoir early Sunday morning.
Around 6:50 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to a report of an overturned canoe on the north end of the reservoir, according to chief deputy Tom Stefanoff. Three men were fishing inside the canoe when it capsized.
One of the men, 33-year-old Jaran Cruz, of Herriman, was distressed and called for help, Stefanoff said, and several people in the area attempted to assist him but could not locate him.
The men unsuccessfully tried to turn the 14-foot long canoe upright, and Cruz attempted to swim for shore while one of the men stayed with the canoe and the other made it to land, Stefanoff said. None of the men were wearing life jackets.
The Carbon County Sheriff's Office dive team was assisted by officers from the State Parks department in locating Cruz about 100 feet from shore in 20-foot deep water at 12:04 a.m.
Cruz's body was transported the state medical examiner's office for examination.
