SALT LAKE CITY — After being found trapped behind sheet rock inside a home wall, Lazarus the cat is ready for a second chance at life.

The 4-year-old male cat, a Lynx Point and Siamese mix, endured temperatures of more than 100 degrees in the unoccupied home’s interior wall before it was discovered by a woman appraising the Layton home, according to a release from the Humane Society of Utah.

Lazarus was brought into the shelter with severe burns and dehydration on July 1 after a hole was cut into the wall to get the cat out.

“We weren't even sure that he was still alive when he was brought into our shelter until he lifted his head to eat some food,” the description of Lazarus on the Humane Society website reads. “This boy had a will to live that kept him going through unknown deprivations, but he is recovered and ready to find a permanent home for the second act of his life.”

It isn’t clear how the cat got inside the wall, according to the Humane Society. After seven weeks of treatment at the shelter, they said the only signs of Lazarus’ ordeal is some fur that is still growing back.

Lazarus likes to have his cheeks scratched and gets along well with other cats and dogs, according to the Humane Society.

Those who are interested in adopting Lazarus can contact the Humane Society at 801-261-2919 ext. 215. The cat can be adopted free of charge and comes with vaccinations, according to the adoption listing.
