LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON — Crews rescued two hikers stranded in Little Cottonwood Canyon Sunday evening.

A 60-year-old female and a 59-year old male called 911 after getting stuck on Hellgate Cliffs around 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

"Steep, rocky and lots of cliffs," Lt. Justin Hoyal of the Unified Police Department said of the conditions.

They hiked up Hellgate Cliffs and crossed over to Mount Superior and then took a wrong turn.

“They took a wrong turn and then they were on the steep descent and he was basically cliffed out,” John Collins, a Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort employee, said. Collins spoke to the two on the phone.

The hikers were about 15 to 20 feet away from the ridgeline.

A Department of Public Safety helicopter used GPS coordinates to determine their exact location while crews prepared for the risky rescue.

Crews worked for more than three hours before deciding to send rescuers up on ATVs.

It took more than 5 hours to bring the hikers down from the mountain. They suffered no injuries.

“You need to know where you’re going,” Collins said. “You need to know the terrain, and you need to do it responsibly.”
