SALT LAKE CITY — Crews responded to a 3-alarm brush fire near 300 S Redwood Road. Investigators determined the fire was started by sparks from a train.

The fire started around 3:30 p.m. south of the train tracks, west of Redwood Road, and burned three to four acres.

The lot where the fire occurred is near many industrial businesses, causing some concern.

Firefighters doused nearby tree logs, some of which had caught fire. Mostly the action was a preventative measure.

Salt Lake City Fire Department said a second, smaller fire just to the east of the bigger fire burned less than one acre. The smaller fire was also located along the railroad tracks.

Salt Lake Fire Department determined the two fires were caused by a train heading east.

Utah Department of Transportation said Redwood Road is closed from 400 S to South Temple while crews attend to the fire.

Initially, off-ramps from I-80 to Redwood Road were closed. Southbound Redwood Road was closed at North Temple. The I-80 off-ramp onto northbound Redwood Road reopened just before 6 p.m.

Redwood Road will remain closed between 400 South and I-80 until crews have left the scene, according to the Salt Lake City Fire Department. They anticipate being on the scene for at least "a few more hours" as of 5:30 p.m. Crews will continue putting out hotspots and ensuring the fire does not rekindle.
