SOUTH JORDAN — Police have charged two 18-year-old men in connection with a vandalism case in Daybreak.

On May 13, 2014, police were called to the East Lake Model Home Village near 4600 West and 10600 South and found “numerous model homes had been vandalized during the overnight hours,” said Master Officer Samuel Winkler.

Security cameras showed two males who spray painted vulgar words and phrases on model homes, community park amenities and a vehicle, causing approximately $10,000 in damage.

Police released video surveillance from one of the model homes to the media, seeking assistance from the public to help identify the men in the videos.

“As a result of the media coverage, the South Jordan Police Department received numerous tips leading to the identity of the two suspects,” Winkler said.

Winkler identified the men in the surveillance video as Gage Bryton Chatwin, 18, from West Jordan, and Carter Matthew Gubler, 18, from South Jordan.

Winkler said the probable cause statement supplied by detectives with the South Jordan Police Department stated the following: “Chatwin and Gubler identified themselves in the photos and admitted to spray painting the model homes, trailer, signs, utility boxes and boathouse.”

Winkler said the men were not booked into jail, but they have been charged with “numerous” third-degree felony charges of graffiti and burglary.

“The South Jordan Police Department would like to express gratitude to both the media outlets and the citizens who supplied information,” Winkler said. “Partnerships between the media, police and citizens lead to safer communities.”
