PROVO — Following mixed reviews for a new proposed flag for Provo, the city is again asking for feedback from residents.

Provo Mayor John Curtis initially presented two new flag designs on his blog in May, but decided to consider additional flags for the city after receiving some negative feedback. He then asked residents to submit designs of their own after what he called a "flag flop."

Now, residents can view the 51 submissions on the mayor’s blog and send feedback about the designs to the city. Curtis wrote the one catch is people need to be positive in the comments he will post.

“While I can chuckle at most of the fun and not-so-nice things residents said to me about my ideas (cue the sniffling and get out the bandages), I don’t think we should assume that others deserve anything but respect,” he wrote. “It’s a brave thing to put out an idea which makes us a little vulnerable. Let’s be positive and share.”

The feedback will be considered during the selection of Provo’s future flag. Curtis wrote that from this point he plans to work with local flag expert Michael Bates to review the suggestions and present a flag proposal to the city council.

The original designs Curtis presented are included for consideration among the current flag nominees. He wrote that he has been impressed with all of the other options residents have developed.

Curtis has been trying to find a new flag design for the past two years and the city has consulted experts from around the world as part of the process. Provo’s current flag was ranked the eighth- ugliest flag in the U.S. in 2004.

The mayor said he doesn’t have a favorite design — he just wants a decision to be made.
