SALT LAKE CITY — As important as it is to keep up-to-date with current events, we also believe it's important to be reminded often of the nice things people do.

So, each week, we share the kind acts our readers have seen, done or experienced, hoping to highlight the goodness in the world.

Robyn T.

On keeping a cool head:

“Recently, my 18-year-old son caused a pretty significant car crash. He's a newer driver that misjudged the speed of an oncoming truck as he tried to make a left-hand turn.

“When I arrived at the accident, I expected to have to deal with an angry and possibly verbally abusive driver, especially after I saw that the front of his new truck was completely smashed in. Instead, the other driver was calm and friendly.

“When I offered him apologies for the huge hassle and inconvenience of losing his truck (and promised that we have very good insurance), he simply said ‘accidents happen.’

“I know it doesn't seem like much, but to a young man hugely embarrassed by his mistake and still shocked by his first accident, and to a mom responding to an accident involving one of her children, it meant more than he could know. It seems rare to find people who can stay decent under pressure, but I'm so glad that he chose not to escalate an already awful situation.”

Michelle F.

On a son’s gratitude:

Page Two:

“My son gave me a hand-made Mother’s day card and here is what he wrote; (made my day and my year).

“‘Dear Mom,

“‘Happy Mother's Day.

“Can you believe you have been a mother for 21 years? That is impressive! Not to mention or the past 19 years you never sold me to the gypsies. HAHA.

"Seriously, though, I love you BTTU and grundles.

"I’will never be able to repay you but I love you more than any soul on earth!”

Brittany H.

On giving a compliment:

“I have been in the throes of morning sickness for the past few weeks. I barely have the energy to do my hair anymore, never mind doing my makeup, ironing or having matching shoes.

“Last Monday, as I walked into the post office to pick up the mail for my boss, a man smiled and said, 'Good morning.'

“I reciprocated, and as I made to walk by him, he touched my cheek and asked, “Have you looked in the mirror? You are beautiful!”

“Instead of karate chopping him, I took the compliment and held onto it tightly. I especially appreciate his flattery because as I was getting back into my truck to go back to work, I ripped the crotch of my jeans. But who cares? Somebody said I was beautiful.”

Shelly U.

On passing it on:

“I was in the drive-thru at McDonald's getting breakfast one morning last year and When I pulled up to the window, the cashier told me that the car ahead of me had already picked up the tab for my breakfast. This gesture had such a positive impact on me that I now try to do it for others every time I have a few extra dollars. It feels just as great to do it for others as it did when someone else did it for me.”

On giving graciously:

“I was in line at Walmart with a few people in front of me when a young woman with a beautiful smile stepped in line behind me. Her mother was in line in front of me and she asked if she could jump ahead of me to be by her mom. She only had a gift card, so I was of course fine with that.

“After she checked out, she turned around with a sly little happy grin and handed me the card. I have no idea why she did this, but I needed the help more than this sweet, beautiful, smiling girl could ever have known. I was so surprised I kind of lost my thoughts for a moment and feel like I didn't thank her.

“I feel like a sweet person like her would read an article like this so I pray she sees this so I could properly thank this earth angel of mine.”

Kurt W.

On taking time out for someone else:

“I was out on a long ride on my bike and was pretty far from home when I got a flat tire that made me topple over the bike and scrape up my knee. Someone driving by saw me go down and pulled over to see if he could help.

“Since I had no equipment to fix my bike, I would have had to walk several hours to get home. He drove me and my bike to a bike shop near my house 20 minutes away. This man saved my Saturday.”

Collette G.

On stepping in for a parent:

“On April 10, my daughter was hiking the Y in Provo with a friend, her mom and siblings. She fell on the Y and tumbled quite a distance, suffering a broken collarbone and multiple face lacerations.

“A family out hiking the trail helped her out. The mom was a nurse and the dad piggybacked her the mile down the mountain. They talked to her the whole way, told her she was strong, and assured her she would be OK.

“I don't know who they were, but I am incredibly grateful they could be there for my daughter when I couldn't.”
