PROVO — In a close voting battle of being crowned as the "Best Place to Live in America," Provo lost to Duluth, Minnesota, in the final round.
In May, Outside magazine turned to its readers to nominate the best town in America for 2014, and the winner was chosen through a series of voting rounds. The competition was set up with a bracket like the ones used in March Madness. Voters were able to choose one town per round.
Provo advanced through each of the six rounds, making it to the final two before being defeated by the city of Duluth on Sunday at 11:59 p.m. Provo residents rallied together to vote Provo through each of the first five rounds where the city beat out Jackson, Wyoming; Taos, New Mexico; Missoula, Montana; Anchorage, Alaska; and Ithaca, New York. Duluth beat Provo in the final round with a vote of 66,758 to 54,875.
Provo Mayor John Curtis promoted the campaign by offering tickets to the Stadium of Fire during a social media initiative encouraging people to vote. Utahns across the state posted selfies on Facebook and Instagram with the hashtag #voteprovo.com.
In 2013, the "Best Place to Live in America" title went to Park City.
