SALT LAKE CITY — Drivers from Tooele to Salt Lake City Thursday morning probably sat in their cars and watched as UDOT crews continued emergency work to repair potholes on a bridge on eastbound I-80 near exit 101.

Delays were heavy between 6:30 a.m.- 9 a.m., and morning commutes will be slow for quite some time. Only one eastbound lane was open.

In addition to the emergency construction, I-80 is the only way to get from Tooele to Salt Lake City. Commuters have nowhere else to go because the construction starts before the I-80 split at state route 201.

“We had already repaired these potholes in the past,” UDOT spokesman Adan Carrillo said. “The patches were already coming off at this point. They had reached the end of their lifespan.”

The bridge that is being rebuilt shakes with all the traffic, making it harder for the concrete to settle. All drivers can do is pack more patience.

“And it’s something that we didn’t want to have to do,” Carrillo said. “However, it is required. We want to maintain the safety of everyone traveling through I-80.”

Crews will be on scene no later than Sunday, but the right lane will be closed until June 22 so the concrete can cure. The project will cost $200,000.
