VERNAL — A New Mexico man has been booked into the Uintah County Jail after authorities say he was linked to multiple thefts from campsites in Ashley National Forest.

Richard Peters, 51, of Albuquerque, was arrested after he was found with items stolen from camp trailer burglaries in the area of the Red Cloud Loop, Uintah County Sheriff's Cpl. Brian Fletcher said.

On Friday, a U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officer encountered Peters while patrolling in the area, Fletcher said. The Forest Service officer said he noticed property on Peters’ van that he believed was stolen.

Sheriff's detectives worked with Forest Service investigators to determine that items found in and around Peters’ vehicle were linked to multiple theft and burglary incidents reported to the sheriff’s office in recent weeks, Fletcher said.

"There may be more victims from thefts that haven’t been reported," the corporal said.

Anyone who believes their camp trailer was burglarized while parked at a campsite on the Red Cloud Loop should call the Uintah County Sheriff's Office at 435-789-2511.
