OGDEN — An inmate who escaped on May 9 has been found and arrested, police say.

Wednesday morning, Ogden Police Department got a call about a man trespassing at the 1100 block on 16th Street in Ogden. The man was identified as Joseph Wayne Cook, a recently escaped inmate.

After talking to Cook at the scene, Police discovered he was lying about his name. After identifying him as Cook, police arrested him, Lt. Tim Scott of the Ogden Police Department said.

Police said he had recently been involved in a home burglary and car theft in the neighborhood where he was found.

Cook was arrested for burglary, two counts of criminal trespass, failure to appear on citation, unlawful acquisition, giving false information to law enforcement, possession of marijuana, stealing a vehicle, shoplifting and failure to disclose identity. He was booked into the Weber County Jail.

Cook was part of an assigned work crew at the Weber County Animal Shelter when he and another inmate walked away on May 9, around 9 a.m., the Weber County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to the Sheriff’s office, they walked to Harrisville City, attempted to steal a bike in front of a residence on 1600 North, but were confronted by the homeowner.

They fled when a neighbor called authorities. Officers from the Harrisville Police Department apprehended Atchley shortly afterwards, but Cook was not located at that time.
