SANDY — Mike Andrews was startled by his dog barking and looked out his window Saturday afternoon to see a neighbor's home on fire.
"I got the garden hose and tried, but you know a garden hose isn't going to fight a house fire. So all I was trying was to buy a little time and hope the fire department would get here soon," he said.
An engine crew arrived and was able to extinguish the blaze, but the house was a total loss, said Sandy Fire Battalion Chief Annette Woodhead.
Woodhead said the blaze at 8184 Bettina Lane was reported at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Two people inside smelled smoke and were able to escape to safety, she added.
Officials on Sunday didn't yet know the cause of the fire, which displaced eight occupants of the home and caused an estimated $200,000 in damage.
Andrews said the fire was quite a thing to see.
"The flames were probably shooting 6 feet up at one point coming out the door," he said. "Sandy City did a good job showing up and getting the flames out and making sure no one was hurt."
